I have been searching trough the internet trying to find an answer to my small technical "problem" but have come up short on answers. Maybe you can give me one.

I have an old pc which i want to rebuild with some new parts. Nothing complicated there. The "problem" is; I have two internal SATA DVD drives, two SATA HDD and three SSDs. The question is will i run into bottlenecks with the GPU when almost maxing out the SATA ports? As far as i know all use the PCI lanes in some way and if there is'nt enough lanes what will happen?

I was thinking about buing a i7 6700k, ASUS Z170 Sabertooth and ASUS 1070 STRIX, maybe  the problem could lie within the tech..?

I know you have a lot to do and maybe no time to answer my question but i thought i would try since i dont know where to look for further answers...

Yours sincerly and thanks in advance

If you somehow bottleneck your GPU using all the SATA ports, you have other issues. :P

I will attempt to answer, and will say that I am not 100% certain, but I think I'm right.

You have nothing to worry about since your x16 GPU will run just fine without bottlenecking in x8 mode. Also, I cannot possibly fathom a scenario where you can possibly be MAXING OUT 7 drives AND a gpu all at the same time.

Lastly, I don't even think that the SATA controller uses PCIe lanes at all so it would be moot.

When in doubt, re-format.

Video cards are connected to the processor directly through dedicated pci express lanes.

The SATA controller is inside the chipset which is connected to the processor through a separate communication channel (usually running at something like 2GB/s or more transfer speeds in both directions).

So no matter how many hard drives you connect to the sata controller, the video card and the chipset (in which the sata controller resides) are completely independent and have no way of affecting each other.
