On a laptop you can't really do much except get a cooling pad, since the cooling on a laptop is meh.

Mine idles at 50 degrees as well. I wouldn't worry. It wont cause any harm.

Try Speedfan to see if you can increase the fan speed but 50C is pretty normal for idle imo. You could try replacing your thermal paste to get lower temps but it would void your laptop warranty.

Its a laptop, its going to run hot. There is no room for the extensive cooling like in a desktop, this why laptop CPUs and GPUs are less powerful than the comparable desktop versions, they have to be in order to keep the temps in check. 50c is horrible for a desktop idle, its 'warm' for a laptop.

Can't you change thermal compound on a laptop?

The issue in all likelihood isn't the thermal compound, it is the size of the fan and the restrictiveness of the enclosure.

My crappy HP laptop used to idle at 80C. Then I removed the heatsink, cleaned out the fins and fans, reapplied the stock thermal paste with Arctic Cooling MX-4 and now it idles at 34C.

If my Hp can do this, your Asus can do better.

Maybe, he doesn't have as much of a delta possible. As I mentioned earlier those temps aren't horrible, slightly on the warm side maybe (don't know enough about that specific laptop model). If the OP knows what he is doing then fine go ahead and change it, however I doubt he will see a significant temp drop. Hope for the best but don't expect too much.

True temps wont change much, but I took the risk of taking my computer apart and cleaning it out. Paid off for me, maybe it'll serve him better, maybe not.

best thing with laptops is just to clean out the dust

This^. If you want to change the thermal compound, good luck, as I have stated it is unlikely you will see much benefit if any.
