Ok so I am currently in the loop of PC gaming after spending the last 5 weeks on vacation and doing summer activities out of town

Anyways after the WORST spirit flight ever getting home (don't use 'em you barely save any money and get a if lucky mediocre flight, well to be fair all flight you haven't spent a college savings on is below decent so try to avoid cheap flights I guess) but I am CONSIDERING an upgrade due to some money I've recently gotten (Spirit fucked up my suitcase and because I have a backup that was some nice $50 even though I got the suitcase originally for $80) and I have to opportunity to sell my dusty, useful for shit (PC Master Race) XBONE stuff for considering the console, controller, and 10 games I think I can snag $400 on ebay but anyways before I do so I need a plan... and with the sudden just war in the graphics industry I was wondering what should I do?.... What I want is to be able to play 1080p at easily 60 FPS or better with Ultra settings, I currently have a GTX 970 and I can accomplish High to Ultra Settings in Modern AAA games at 60 FPS but I also want my graphics not to choke up overnight If I upgrade to 1440p or if AAA games starts ramming graphics cards MUCH harder.

Option 1: Keep the GTX 970, just buy the standard AAA game when they come and save up the money

Option 2: Sell the Xbox Stuff and buy a GTX 1070 (either founders or snag a few more bucks for a third party card)

Option 3: Save up for a GTX 1080 (Bare in mind those go as high as borderline $1000)

Option 4: Suggest a card that I should save up for or buy after selling the Xbox stuff (Maybe something from team red I should invest in?)

Option 5: Custom

based on an educated guess , i would predict the 1060 to be around the 970 in terms of performance .

ok so look more towards 1070 but the RX 480 from AMD which is only $200 scores around or slightly better than GTX 970 so a GTX 1060 that would score too close to the 970 would be a disaster for Nvidia unless if the price is below $200 which I doubt considering Nvidia will probably come with a 1050

Don't let them fleece you. Check out the Dallas Microcenter (link) and save yourself a lot of money and trouble. Ask when the next truck comes in and they'd be more than happy to help you.

If your goal is 1440p and nothing more either keep the 970 or upgrade to the 1070 I would recommend upgrading but either way works, but if you want 4K then get a GTX 1080, I just got mine yesterday and it plays DOOM at 4K Ultra 60fps easy, infact as a torture test I ran DOOM at 8K Ultra on my single GTX 1080, (Yes, 7680x4320!) and somehow still got 20fps at ultra! In my opinion, if you want a REAL future proofed card, get a 1080.

I think 1080 is overkill because it is going to be a couple years before I go up to 4k (and by then 8k may probably be a thing) but 1070 will assure me 1440p for a while. Look's like I should wait till everyone actually has 1070 stock then because I don't think they're designed for some to be nearly $800 all the time

what i did is compare clocks and FLOPS of maxwell vs pascal and compare cycles per second , taking into account the slight IPC decrease in pascal .  Pascal is basically maxwell on 16nm finfet, with a longer pipeline .What i found is that the 1060 should perform at about 970 level . But I may be wrong . And nvidia might slow down the 980 to make the 1060 faster than it
