GTX 980 impulse buy

007agentHP

since the water-based death of my r9 280x i've been looking for a new GPU. i bought the one below for $315

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127901

now im thinking, is it better to grab a 480 for cheaper?

these are the games i play

Minecraft

GTA 5

Mad Max

Saints Row 4

Watch_dogs

Watch_dogs 2 (when released)

at 1080p

will the 480 run them all on ultra at 60 FPS  or can only the 980 do it?

Minecraft will run fine even with a 950.

What resolution do you want to play those games at? And don't forget about the GTX 1060, it's looking like it might be a better option than the 480.

Minecraft is CPU based unless you're running shaders, which I believe that CUDA performs better for some shaders pack.

On GTA V I can almost Max out the graphics at 1080p on a 380.

Never played mad max

On watchdogs I've maxed it out on a 760. Don't know about watchdogs 2 but I'm going to assume I can max it out on my 380 now.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Cancel ASAP! The 980 is just about the worst thing you can buy right now price to performance.

even at $285? MIR

its 30% slower than a 1070 and the 1070 is $150 more in this case

Cancel the order, the 980 is not a good value anymore, and it really wasn't a good value since the 980ti was released.

Right now due to high demand, the 1070 is going for around $450-500 or so, though should drop down closer to $400 within a few weeks/months as the demand drops.

If you get lucky, you can find a GTX 980ti for $400 used.

I'd suggest you just hold off and save some more money, then get a much better card.

Also, you can use integrated graphics, that's all I had with my PC for a good 5-6 months, and then I got my GTX 970 and have been using that for over a year now.

The only thing in that price range which is as good or better than a 980 is a 1060, and that costs $300.

So just keep the 980.

980 Ti is going for 400-470 NEW at the moment.

As for OP: 980 is the best in that bracket. I say stick with it.

You said almost max lol. Maybe GTA Online is a lot more demanding, but I struggle to get playable framerates if I max everything out and play at 2xMSAA/MFAA especially in heavy grass areas or near the eclipse towers.
