New GTX 1080 install - updated w/ppd results!

New EVGA GTX 1080 SC, just in from Newegg :D

large.577eacc4b7b4a_DSCF9547_25.jpg

Can't wait to install it in my Linux Folding Rig - gotta wait a few hours for the GTX 970's to finish their WU's <impatient> :S

Might as well research Linux NVIDIA drivers while I wait ...

Anyone interested in install notes or performance #'s, let me know and I'll post some updates.

- Pete

Edit - July 17, 2016: just updated this topic with some PPD info - see the post below for details, TL;DR: Overall calculated PPD so far: 708715

Hate to say it, but this will go into my Linux folding rig (I don't have any Linux games), at least until I get a 4k monitor.  I don't need 120+ fps in my current gaming setup and I've been so busy lately I haven't been gaming anyway.  Hopefully I'll catch up near the end of the year when things slow down (hopefully).

I'm looking forward to getting a 4k 3D monitor (or the LG OLED55E6!!! - but it may be a while before it's "reasonably" priced).  Then I'll move it back to windows for Skyrim 4k 3D (I'm a mod slut - seem to spend more time tweaking and programming than playing, lol), Witcher 3, and Shadow of Mordor - I don't do FPS so much anymore.  Not sure if I want to revisit Mass Effect ... I killed Tali and still haven't recovered <sniff>.

Yea, I've been waiting a while too - it was supposed to be delivered yesterday, but had a shipping hiccup.  It's funny how something so routine - waiting for a delivery - makes me feel like a little kid getting their first hot wheel, lol.

Your running Linux with a gtx 1080.  Wow that is interesting.  I hope you can dual boot so you can play windows games on steam.

Well, look at the bright side - they're forcing the GTX 9xx prices down, and you'll be able to get a good upgrade to your 760, for a lot less than even a couple months ago.

Nah, I like to keep the linux rig folding 24/7 - I'll move the card to my windows system when I start gaming in 4k.

I changed as I received a similar offer for a (for me) more prefered card from Zotac, (amp extreme, droool) but I received an email that there was a delay with the plane so now it comes on saturday? xD

Coincidence?

Why Linux over Windows for folding? Do you get more PPD?

I'm compiling my performance logs over the weekend.  My linux box still has the 1080 confused with the 980, but on a positive note the new 637.27 drivers have bumped my 980 #'s up quite a bit ; ) - or else I made some other change that improved the performance - I'm not a linux guru:P.

I Will post the linux results when I finish the compilation.  I plan to move the 1080 over to a windows 7 system sometime in the next week or so to compare the 2.

Overall calculated PPD so far: 708715

This covers the past 9 days or so, basically since install. A sample project listing follows, and the whole html table is attached if you're interested.  The projects are listed in the order they were completed.
Note: I calculated the project times from the project "Log Started" entry to the "Final credit estimate" points awarded entry, so the actual TPF values are a bit smaller than 1% of the project times.  The overlap between previous project completion and new project start would raise the calculated PPD, but it seems negligible.  I have not done any calculations to determine whether that is the case or not.

For reference, my linux box setup:

  • Mobo: ASUS P8Z77V-Pro
  • CPU:   i5-2300 (which means the slots are PCIe 2.0)
  • Mem:  4 MB
  • HD:     80GB (from a PS3!)
  • GPU1: GTX 980 - EVGA Kingpin (PCIe 2.0 @8x)
  • GPU2: GTX 1080 - EVGA Superclocked (PCIe 2.0 @8x)
  • PSU:   Rosewill Quark 750W (80+ Platinum)
  • OS:     Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
  • Driver: Linux x64 (AMD64/EM64T) Display Driver, version 367.27, Jun 13, 2016

Don't ask about a case, because the system is sitting loose on top of an upside down costco grapes tray box (about 6 to a pallet size ; ), lol.

Example Data from the HTML file:

# Project Core Run, Clone, Gen Points hh:mm:ss Calc. PPD
1 11704 0x21 R0, C392, G77 122419 03:38:10 808021
2 9159 0x18 R4, C0, G388 38326 01:29:25 617216
3 11401 0x21 R52, C11, G14 115326 03:21:26 824438
4 11430 0x21 R0, C49, G43 65208 02:09:37 724440
5 9160 0x18 R114, C0, G342 40121 01:22:21 701569
6 13105 0x21 R5, C12, G171 26176 00:56:56 662062
7 9441 0x21 R11, C5, G290 58854 01:54:38 739311
8 11402 0x21 R0, C27, G209 113822 03:25:10 798880

This table was created using data from the actual log entries.

As for windows, dual booting may be in the cards - I'll look into it, but first I'm going to fiddle with FAHcontrol until it has my 1080 and 980 properly identified - it still has them backwards.  (Or else my 980 is outperforming my 1080 :P

If you have any questions or whatnot - I'm following this topic and will check up on it weekly (hopefully!)

Really great number but i am a bit disappointed one the other side. I had my hopes that the card could reach 1 million points per day in certain projects.

Yea, it's not as high as I would have liked, but maybe it'll do better in windows?

Thanks Petem. Looks to be bang on what I am getting in Win10, so all things being equal, you might not see an improvement when you change OS.

I was hoping for more too, but I guess I'm just happy that it even folds at all. GPUGrid over on BOINC for instance doesn't support pascal at all. So we have that to be thankful for! I'm hoping driver updates will help PPD numbers in the future though
