Nvidia Driver Killed My GPU?

I would like to say I hate copy/pasting old posts but people don't ever come back after a day or two to help anymore, so I have to do this to find a fix

Previous post:

 

I've had a wonderful experience with my 750Ti - as my previous posts prove... - and recently I got to add another issue to my already extensive list

Also, don't say 'buy a new GPU' because I don't really have the funds just yet - I only want to identify the issue rn

 

So, in Skyrim specifically, although still present in every game I own on steam, performance was noticeably lower than it used to be - with fps dropping from 60 to 15 in a matter of 2 months or so - and CTDs and driver crashes are commonplace at the moment. Today. while attempting skyrim once again, on the main menu, the screen kept freezing for about a second on intervals of about 3 seconds - the audio still plays - and after another CTD, I flee to google to once again search for a solution. While on google, the mouse cursor started lagging dramatically, and then after about 3 seconds, both monitors just froze. No audio, no response, nothing.

I had to reset it using the front I/O and once I got back into windows I was greeted with a driver crash before starting a full scan of my PC using Norton.

No viruses were detected, which eliminates that possibility.

 

Also, the GPU in my system rn is an RMA'd 750Ti from EVGA, and it worked beautifully in the first 4ish months of having my PC, until after I installed an Nvidia driver that dealt irreversible damage, as rolling back did nothing, the GPU after RMA was still broken, updating drivers isn't because I need a performance top-up, it's just another attempt at fixing the issue in the hopes that there is some fix in the code that makes everything fine.

 

The GPU isn't underpowered for it's tasks either, as in October 2015, skyrim ran at constant 60fps with no issues on max settings

 

My current driver version is 368.39, and i've already tried reverting back as far as september, so that doesn't work either.

 

 

Sidenote: I am considering buying a new GPU next month, although if you identify it to be the motherboard causing the issue then I will buy a new motherboard instead, but I strongly believe this to be a GPU based issue

 

Also, note that when I refer to 'Today' I mean about 2 weeks ago. The chrome freezing issue hasn't happened again but the game performance is still mediocre

When you rolled back the drivers did you use DDU to uninstall the driver first? 

Have you tried a fresh install of Windows? 

 

You said "The gpu after RMA was still broken"....so you were sent a new GPU and it had the same performance issue as before? That definitely sounds like the issue is caused by something that isn't the GPU. What motherboard, CPU, and PSU do you have?

Stuttering can be caused by drive issues.

Not drivers, drives.

As in HDD's, SSD's, etc.

What storage device are you using?

EDIT: Also, can you please try running skyrim with the settings all the way down? If it is still stuttering, we know it isn't a problem with the card.

I didn't try rolling back after DDU no, so I can try that.

Also, a fresh install of windows is the last thing I want to do, but if it's the only fix then I guess it's worth doing.

 

And yes, after the RMA, the performance was improved to what it was before for about a day, and then it carried on being like it was.

My other specs are:

MSI A78M-E35 V2

AMD Athlon x4 860K  @ stock speeds

Seasonic 430Eco 

 

I am going to be getting an EVGA 500w PSU on the 31st too

Happens to me in operation metro in bf4. FPS drops from 120-170 to 80 and back up again in a second. It's my HDD that does this

Wasn't there a driver scandal a while back where new drivers were damaging GPUs in certain instances?  I don't recall the details.  

Weird that it worked fine for a day after the RMA then crapped out again.

 

and yeah, a slow hard drive and slow CPU can cause stuttering especially in games like Skyrim if you have a bunch of mods running.

Skyrim is on an SSD with windows, I'm currently disabling all mods to check on low settings

What are the cpu/gpu temps and ram/VRAM usages? 

 

I know reinstalling Windows sucks, but I would recommend trying a fresh install as as it's very possible that's where the issue lies. 

 

p.s. why are you upgrading from a Seasonic 430w unit to an EVGA 500B1?

I just ran skyrim, no mods, brand new save. 60fps but freezing and black screening and after about 15 seconds, the game was force closed and a notification saying my driver version had crashed and fully recovered appeared, to then be replaced with a "application 'TESV.exe' has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware

Alright, so not a drive issue. TESV.exe is skyrim's application, if I'm not mistaken, so that's weird. Do you have an integrated gpu? It could be that the game is trying to run on that instead of your desktop gpu.

x4 860K doesn't have iGPU, also already researched that possibility

Just noticed something. In the original post, you said that "While on google, the mouse cursor started lagging dramatically". I don't think that could've been caused by the GPU and we've ruled out a drive or driver issue. Do you think that the CPU is having some kind of issue?

Also, is your 750ti OC'd?

Do DDU and use older drivers. If it works just don't use the new drivers. It isn't like a game won't work.

Well for my cpu, my temps seems fine, and my clock speeds are okay.

Plus, the 750Ti is factory overclocked from EVGA - it's the superclocked edition, but I haven't overclocked more than it already is out of the box

i know AMD had one of those a while back, not sure about nvidia. i'm that one nvidia user that seemigly never encounters driver issues :/

 

on topic: DDU/reinstall drivers, check for dust, reseat your GPU just in case.

Also, along with trying above suggestions, check BIOS and motherboard drivers are up to date... try a different PSU GPU cable if possible.

i actually did some testing at one point, where a mass amount of people were claiming that the latest version made their GTX970 crash with FSX.

I'm back after DDU and rollback, skyrim is 60fps lowest settings with no mods. Going to put it up to ultra and start activating mods and seeing how it goes
