100% cpu load

Hi, When opening task manager while gaming (Overwatch) My cpu usage is mostly 100% is this bad?

 

I5 3470 @ 3.6Ghz

HD 7850

8GB Ram

Is HD 7850 on-board graphics? That's probably fucking why. Overwatch isn't Solitaire. Buy a GTX 650 or some shit if you're going to play Overwatch.

CPU usage is probably because well, games take CPU to work

My graphics card isn't onboard, I just heard that if the cpu is on a 100% load it might be bottlenecking.

Oh okay thanks man, yeah performance wise its great and all but I'm looking to upgrade to an rx480 and was thinking about a potential bottleneck

Your CPU should be fine for the RX 480, but in case you do find stutters, look for software that's hogging up CPU resources in the task manager first

even if you're technically bottlenecking if you're getting playable frames it doesn't matter. the only time you should be worried about where your bottleneck is is when you fail to get playable frames

If the cpu is at a 100%, it is a bottleneck. What are your gpu usage when this happens?

If the gpu is not at 99% load, when ur cpu is at a 100% load, your cpu is slowing down your graphics card to keep up. Which means that your graphics card wants to give you more frames, but cant because of your cpu.

 

Are you gaming on a 60hz or a 144hz monitor?

Download Msi afterburner. There are many monitoring options there

I would recommend CPUID HWMonitor. It can show you your cpu usage and gpu usage all in the same place. Along with lots of other info. What OS do you use?

Great. If you open the task manager, you can click on any of the headers under the application tab, and it will order them by that thing (name, cpu usage, memory usage, disk usage, network usage). The first click will order them by that header in descending order, the second will order them by that header in ascending order. Use the task manager, ordering items in descending order by CPU usage. The apps using the most of your cpu will be at the top of the list. (make sure to load the task manager before you're expecting to see 100% usage, or else good look getting it to open).

You can use HWMonitor to compare utilizations of all components in one place and find bottlenecks.

I think I found the problem, in task manager last night when I played Overwatch, I set it on high priority. When I don't set it on high priority my cpu is like 80-90% when I'm in-game, and my GPU 99%. Is this good?

It could still be another application using all your cpu. Putting Overwatch in a high priority state just means that the processor will try to spend more time executing "Overwatch" than executing the other stuff. So it could be the case that all you did was knock the offending application up the priority cue so it gets less execution time, and therefore uses the processor less.

I'd really like you to watch the CPU usage tab of your task manager and really find the offending application, after returning Overwatch to normal priority.

My current Graphics Card is the HD7850, So pretty old. I'm just testing if I need to upgrade my CPU because I'm buying an RX480 when the aftermarket ones come out, and want it to perform at it's full potential.
