My phone recently died but I am due for an upgrade so I am curious to see what the most popular choice is, I was leaning towards the S7 Edge or HTC 10 but i'm open to other suggestions.

If you are using Android, if I were you I'll get a nexus device. 

I am buying a nexus 5, for $100 dollar. 

And it's brand new.

Other than battery life, nexus device is great. 

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

As of right now, the OnePlus 3 is the most compelling, complete and cheap experience. As soon as September starts, its either a Note 7, Iphone 7 Plus/Pro or a HTC Nexus 2016 soon after that.
