hey listen all i'm just curious about something, so apparently the RX 480 has a power issue concerning the PCI-E slot that can result in that slot frying. I'm asking around if this exclusively happens to the 8 GB vs the 4GB and under what circumstances such an event would occur. From what I understand it only draws these exceeded ratings during periods of high stress such as like Crysis 3 on like ultra settings at like 4k. I'm only a 1080p gamer and i'm considering getting this just so i can get decent framerates without making my games look like they came from the quake engine, for a cheap price.

As just a quick restatement, will said power failures happen exclusively on the 8GB/4GB or both, and do i run the risk of it happening to me? myself being a "low res" gamer wanting to squeeze out a few extra frames.

(also an apology for not tagging i've always been crap at tagging and i'm relitively new to this forum)

You might benefit by waiting for board partner cards with may have more than just a single 6-pin pci-e power solution,

The the card doesnt care what resolution it is pumping out. 100% load is 100% load 4k or 720p (with more frames).

And it happens to both the 8GB and 4GB version (although the issue is said to be fixed with a driver update coming).

what i'm getting it is that I don't think i'll be pushing the card as hard as compared to some of the people that have been reporting the issue.   (also thanks for the fast responses guys)

Ah, might be a good idea to avoid the 480 then. If you're dead set on it, avoid the reference card, and go for one with at least an 8pin power connector.

The issue seems to be the card not getting enough power from the single 6pin.

so what i'm getting is that i should just bide my time until the after market stuff comes out then go from there

your card will still be at 100% load (unless you turn on vsync) even at 1080p

see my reasoning behind this is because i'm running 1080p and i'm not doing like super high settings so i'm not gonna push it super hard so it' won't be at 100% load and draw a lot of power to run the risk of frying my board. (feel free to correct me if this thinking is wrong)

Hopefully the 3rd party manufacturers such as xfx, can "fix" what AMD did wrong.

It doesn't matter if you're playing at 4k, or 1080p. The moment it wants more voltage than the 6pin provides, it will draw more power from the pci-e than the slot is intended to provide.

Higher end motherboards are typically built to be more durable,  and can handle it. Sadly, the 480 is intended to be a budget card, and it seems budget motherboards can't handle the stress.

AMD has released a statement saying they plan to fix it with a driver. But that means a lower voltage, essentially neutering the card.

so again what i'm hearing is waiting for an aftermarket card to come out and get one of those. if this is the case 1, can you guys reccomend a good brand and 2, how would one find out about such a card?

I've never had an issue with an xfx card. I hear sapphire is good too.

You'll just have to wait for them to release details, shouldn't take long.

ok, but that doesn't answer the question, how would I find out the new cards just keep my ears out?

100% usage of the die doesn't mean 100% usage of the vram. Additional voltage draw occurred when benchmarks consumed all 8gbs of vram in the testing. In either case, like everyone else mentioned, just wait for board partners to release their's. Don't worry, when they do, a frenzy of benchmarks on these "8pin RX480" will occur and you'll likely hear about it.

it won't fry anything from this century

it's not cool on AMD's part to exceed the standardized specifications, but it won't fry anything either, you're over exaggerating

reference card has crap cooling though, wait for the Nitro

alright now would these third party cards cost the same? more? will power consumption still be the same? i'm on a super tight budget at the moment.

thats for CPU

since prime95 uses AVX2 and no other stress tests do

afaik there are no special GPU parts that behave like AVX on CPUs
