Don't use ubuntu server, it's harder to set things up without a GUI. In most BIOSes, you can set it up to boot at a certain time. You can then write a small startup script to back up files, and shutdown when finished.

You can probably write a script on the main PC. I can't help you there.

Ok

I think there's something that would probably work, I'll try to find the youtube video.

EDIT: Nope, I can't find it. This guy built a physical switch to backup his PC.

Correct me if I have missed it, but what client operating system are you attempting to backup?

Is this a Windows based PC you are attempting to backup to a remote server or an Ubuntu desktop you are attempting to backup to a remote server?

Please quote or tag me if you need a reply

Id higly suggest that you get a newer server as the 2950 runs hot and loud. If you pay for power its cheaper to buy a newer used server, but that being said.

Your limited to 2tb drives with the perc 6/i. Id personally run a usb flash drive inside it for boot and then a 6x 2tb hdds for storage.

For os it doesn't really matter. All you need is an os that will do a simple file share. If you don't mind linux something like ubuntu server, debian, centos will be fine. I will use centos as an example as i use it more. You can also use something like rockstor if you want a web interface.

For centos, download the minimal install here and then put it on a usb stick with rufus. http://mirrors.gigenet.com/centos/7/isos/x86_64/CentOS-7-x86_64-Minimal-1511.iso

Then install it to your usb drive inside your server(2gb or bigger is needer)(you will need 2 usbs one for the os and one for the os to be installed on.

Then you can ssh into the server once you know its ip either find it on your router or use a monitor to login in and type ip addr.

Then install samba and your good to go.

If you want more detial ask me.

Ubuntu Server is absolutely fine as a server operating system, and if you've never used Linux most people's starting point. If you use the desktop edition, you'll be wasting valueable resources on a desktop environment.  If you want, you can use the desktop version to set things up, and then tell it to run "headless" (without the desktop) once everything is set up, and restart the desktop environment if you need to do any administration. Or, you can use SSH with something like PuTTY or Git Bash to do administration with the server. I believe Ubuntu Server includes an SSHd (the thing that you connect to with SSH) and you'd just connect like `ssh user@localhost' with localhost being your server's ip or hostname on your network.

As for a script to backup things, I'm not sure you can do that if you're running Windows on the computer you'd like to back up files from. If both machines were using Linux, you could use rsync on a scheduled cronjob to backup things. There's probably some software I don't know of to backup to an Ubuntu server from Windows. If you're content with just dragging and dropping files as a backup, you can also use Swish to connect your sever's filesystem to your Windows computer.
