Provided the pin-out is correct on the other end of the cable it should. RJ-45 ports are backwards compatible with RJ-11 connectors.

Thanks, works perfectly. I really should of tried this out before making the post...

I recently had my apartment renovated and I noticed that the electrician changed the old phone outlet socket (most Australians should know what I mean, 3 pin thing that required an adapter for a dsl line) with a RJ45 wall socket. Will this work with adsl? If so how do I also connect my home phone to it?

You can use 6P*C (2C/RJ11, 4C/RJ14, 6C/RJ25) plug with a 8P8C/RJ45 socket with a spacer that fits inside the 8P8C socket and reshapes it to the 6P*C socket, or by crimping your own cable with an 8P8C plug on one end (for the wall) and 6P*C plug on the other end (for the modem).

You could also just plug the 6P*C plug in the 8P8C socket but it might be knocked loose without the spacer that fits between the two.

Some of Telstra's ADSL filter/splitter units are just a box with 3x 8P8C ports using the 8P8C->6P*C spacers to make it easier to fit regular phone plugs in the ports.

Agreed. Just plug your 4p4c 6p2c RJ-11 in there and it'll work as usual. Assuming you would know if they installed a router at the other end. I have no idea about Australia code but here in Finland those RJ-45 are all routed to a single electrical maintenance box and from there to the outside world. It's the same box that has all the fuses. If you have a similar box in your house, you can take measurements, swap connections and so on in there. That's also where the router and possibly the fiber converter would be installed.

RJ11 is the 6P2C standard not 4P4C, 4P4C is used between the handset and phone body, but between the phone body and the wall socket it's 6P2C.
