I just updated from 14.04 to 15.10. On 14.04 a GUI would come up, I would type my pass and login. But now it asks for my username which I don't know. Help me out.

you can type in root as the username and then type in your root password. then go into accounts and check your normal user

when you try to install a program does it prompts you for a password. thats the password you would use. it can be the same as your normal password

So when you turn on your system to you see a gui or white text on black. 

 

If you don't know your usename you can hold shift when booting and go to the recovery option and select then hit open a root command promt. Then type ls /home/ 

 

It will list your username there

 

Then try logging in and typing startx if you don't have a gui.
