Hello friends! @LinusTechTipsCommunity

I am currently struggling to decide what to buy between the new graphics cards. And before i give my reasoning and ask for advice i want to flat out say to to bring any sort of fanboy argument into this. I find that stuff to be childish and distracting. I am strictly looking for the better deal for my money according to the current situation.

Here is a bit about me & what i do & uses for this hardware:

I enjoy gaming, and making gaming content with my friends. However to make content good i need a good system to handle and record Ultra graphics (high textures & resolution). Currently i am using a 1080P monitor but do plan to pickup a 1440p since prices are falling or a 4k one. I am not a fanboy of neither side and have had my fair share of disappointments and happy gaming with both since the gt 9800 (my first dedicated card), a gt 740(in another system), hd 5850, gtx 750, r9 270(non x).

Now the question is which? Currently i am excluding the GTX1080 as the prices are skyrocketing due to supply. I am willing to buy one card currently if i go with the Rx 480 and get another later but i wanna get gtx 1070-1080 performance. So would that route get me that for the 500 it costs for both or should i buy one single gpu when the supply is replenished and prices drop back to the msrp range of the 1080?

In case your wondering my current limit is 500 however i can wait a few paychecks o get a better card if recommended. Please and thanks to all of you for the help!

You could buy a GTX 1070, it has great performance and will run most games max'd out no problem. ($600-isch)
Or you could buy 2x RX 480 to gain almost the same performance as a GTX 1080 would (2x $200-isch).

I'm a AMD fanboy so I won't be able to tell any facts about Nvidia since I simply don't care about them,
Buying 2x RX 480 might give you lower performance since not every game supports AMD's Crossfire technology.
Most games do thought so unless you are buying games that exists under a rock (and HITMAN 6, the newest one :Þ ) you would be fine.

a GTX 1080 would be out of your price range I guess.

While a single 480 isnt great for high details at 1440p, 2 of them would be more than plenty .Even the 4gb versions should be fine, as I run a 3gb card at 1440p, and have no issues. What you could do is get a 480 now to pair with your 1080p monitor, then get the 2nd one when you get the monitor upgrade. A 1070 would give you a good bit more perf than a single 480, but dual 480's are around the price of a single 1070, and the crossfire 480's will deliver much more raw perf (assuming good scaling). I believe amd has got their shit together with crossfire regarding microstutter, so going dual gpu should not be too much of an issue.

One nvidia specific feature that may be good for you is shadowplay. If you are unsure about it, you can see the certain timed buffer, which will work as a "black box" recording previous events in the background. So when something cool happens you can save the last few minutes of gameplay.

Also regarding the monitor, 1440p is the sweet spot I feel where it looks quite good in terms of pixel density (assuming 27"), and performance needed, as 4k will tank your fps.

Thank you all! I'm thinking just based off the responses I have here and the research I've done, that a single rx 480 (considering its a bit better then the 970) will do just fine maxing everything at 1080 and if you are all right about multi-gpu scaling being good on the AMD side then I should be good to get the other with my new monitor as has been stated already. Thanks again and it isn't official as of now so if any other thoughts I'm still glad to hear them! Thanks for the responses guys!
