well...i saw tech of tomorrows review and it seemed to peforme under 970 overall.... so i would say no. maybe wait for 1060

It's better getting 1 $400 GPU (e.g. gtx 1070) rather than 2 $200 GPUs, unless you are playing games that have good support for SLI/crossfire

Don't get butthurt that it didn't fulfill your hopes and dreams. AMD delivered on what they said they would, the hype is entirely the people's fault.

 

OP, since the RX 480 doesn't overclock very well, I would look at getting an R9 390, a nice aftermarket one. I was at MicroCenter yesterday and it's not hard to pick one up for around $250. Especially if you buy used, you should be able to find one well in the low two hundreds. It performs better than the RX 480 (or about the same) but it overclocks a lot better and with an aftermarket cooler it'll stay cooler. Only drawback is power draw.

I'd keep the GTX 960. Why? Well, it's not worth spending the extra money on. You're not getting THAT much more fps and the GTX 960 would be kinda hard to sell right now.

One NDA-breaking review means little to nothing.

 

Not butthurt since I'm switching to nvidia later in the year anyway, regardless of how the 480 performs

From a pure performance perspective, the Radeon RX 480 isn't breaking any new ground. You won't find it breaking records in 3DMark, it's not putting NVIDIA's GTX 1080 on its heels and won't even surpass the Radeon R9 390X in real-world gaming performance. With AMD's stated target and goal of hitting the mainstream PC gaming market with a ~$200 graphics card, those options were never on the table. What we have instead is a product that puts NVIDIA on notice that it can't simply sit back and depend on the Maxwell to get the job done this summer.

The Radeon RX 480 is equal to or faster than the GeForce GTX 970 in every game but one, Grand Theft Auto V; and that title has some severe hitching and stutter that AMD was able to reproduce but doesn't have a fix for yet. In a couple of games, namely Hitman and Rise of the Tomb Raider, the advantage for the new RX 480 was substantial - as much as 40%! While I'm still not sold 100% on the idea that asynchronous compute is the culprit here (after all, even AMD has only mentioned that one of the DX12 titles we use here even implements it) it's hard to not see the DX12/DX11 split in the performance data. Clearly the AMD 4th generation GCN architecture is ahead of what Maxwell can deliver. What we do NOT have yet is a comparable GTX 1060 card based on Pascal to toss in the mix.

RX 480 8GB version seems to be around GTX 970 performance for 1080p and 1440p gaming.

But that's right now ... more versions of RX 480 will come, that will probbably easily compare with GTX 980 and R9 390X.

 

So if I were you, I would wait a bit longer to see board partners cards
