Do you guys think that a Razer Blade 14 (2016) could run an HTC vive? I would imagine that would be a good laptop for a backpack setup if you could power it and cool it

depends on what you are using the vr setup for. your talking about this razor blade right? http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-systems/razer-blade

Portable as in you can use it when you go somewhere? Or portable as in you want to connect it to your back in the room?

The cable isn't that big of an annoyance if you're careful. Few if any games require rapid movement.

That one has a 970M in it, which is not NVIDIA VR ready.

try looking at some steam VR benchmark numbers to see what GPU you should get in your laptop

Oh....

That.

Something as simple as google cardboard lets you watch youtube VR videos without a hitch, and with higher resolution than the VIVE.  and I don't really think that youtube binge watching was what OP had in mind.

Practically?  No.  The 970m found in the laptop cannot effectively run a Vive.  Only portable solution I'm aware of right now is a desktop grade 980 found in a couple of high end, and decidedly not very portable gaming/workstation notebooks.  Maybe with the advent of mobile 1080/1070?

kek try and put a razer blade into a backpack, it will end up in flames. It already thermal throttles under load and sounds like a hair dryer and now try to put that into a backpack, it will not end well.

There are some "vr" backpacks on the way, but they only have about 1 hour batterylife. If you want a laptop you will have to get a laptop with a full GTX 980 and mod the F out of the backpack so it can be cooled down.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Yeah I would be modding the backpack alot. But if the 970M isn't enough then it's kinda pointless

a 970m is kinda like a GTX 960 and you need at least a GTX 970, but a GTX 980 would be the optimal starting point for simple VR games.

I don't think it'd really work out. Have you tried a Vive?

Yes it can. Probably not for really intense games, but it should be fine for everything out now.

I think the whole idea is a little off. There isn't really enough moveable area to require a backpack.

Nope, a GTX 970 is for simple things and that thing is much more powerful than a GTX 960 or 970m

They both don't meet the specs anyone have said. Everyone that has something to do with VR, says at least GTX 970 for some what stable 90FPS and that is not for power hungry games that is for the easier games. A 970m has about the same power as a desktop GTX 960 and the 7970 is about 15% faster than a GTX 960 and therefor also about 15% faster than a 970m.

You must remember that this is like running 2x 1440p screens and you need to feed them 90FPS or else you can start to feel weird.

They're not, actually. The screens on the headsets are 1080x1200. That's more than 50% less than 1440p total.

It also depends on the game. Many times the 7970 is at par with the 960. It's not 15% faster across the board.

Lastly, the 7970 can run pretty much every VR title currently out; the easy ones, with ease. Unless, of course, the Vive my reference 7970 is running is just magical in some way.

Sort of. The 280x is slightly faster, especially vs the reference card I have.

They averaged it. Simple as that. I didn't say the 7970 will run everything coming out, nor would I recommend any M chip to run it (or anything tbh, I find gaming laptops stupid). I simply said it can run the easier titles, which it can.

I have not had that experience, I've had the experience that a 980 can barely do VR properly without dropping below the magic 90 FPS.

Depends on that 7970 you get, the normal 7970 is about as close as it can be to a 280x, but the 7970 GHz ed is more powerful. A "normal" 7970 with a very slight OC is just a 280x.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...
