Hey,

I work for the ISP At&t, I'm a cable guy, I install cable, hsia, voip. Part time techy.

I've always had a passion for hardware, lost that passion when I found out how saturated/automated the market had become, I admire that you guys found this niche.

Long story short, I stumbled upon this device.

I've had terrible experience with range extenders, and think thier just an overall bad idea.

Grab the concept, plug your extender at about 75% signal strength for 1 wireless network, and replicate w/e crap performance that gives you, and how I hate have more than 2 network names, 1 for me, the other for everyone else.

I've tried multiple brands, always disappointing, and changing the the ssid manually when almost out of range of another network = pain, I've had better experience with PowerLines and a router, alot more stable.

The next solution is to run a cat6 to the middle of my home and install an access point, but I'm too lazy :D

I'm interested in knowing what the performance of  these Plume devices are, mainly from a link speed and streaming from another network device point of view.

If anyone has any ideas or better solutions, feel free to throw them at me, or better yet, if you've ever used these bad boys ( https://plumewifi.com ) please advise on performance, apparently you can throw 1 of these in every room.

Doubt it could be that simple, gotta be giving up something.

I'm just so tired of using these new products, such a waste of money, and the build up of anticipation, for a big let down.

 

I guess it's worth a try. Haven't seen anything else like it.

If each is routing and broadcasting as a router itself and not tied to a main one you might run into trouble if they are too close. But if they are all extenders or end points it might work well

I've tried using multiple range extenders that piggy back off of the 1 closest to the router, and duplicated the ssid, terrible idea to say the least, constant drop offs, it's like the devices couldn't keep a stable connection, even while standing still.

 

What I think was happening, when I duplicated the ssid, was that 1st extender would see the nearest duplicated ID, and rebroadcast a connection with no internet.

 

I guess if all the ssid were different it would work, but who wants to constantly be changing ssid as you walk through the house.

Yeah, or you could have super low powered end points everywhere so once you connect to the network you can just hop from each end point and not even know. Schools, hotels, offices, all use this

Considering you can only pre-order them according to the website i doubt your going to get the answer you want on here. :/ I've never heard of them and im super skeptical. If i was you i'd be waiting for thorough reviews before i drop that much money on a potential scam.

Just grab a 3 pack of Ubiquiti AP's and you'll get a much better product, buy a cheapo poe switch and just throw these in the roof / depending on your house, the basement would also work. if you have foot thick concrete walls grab the LR versions. have one near the router, then just have 2 Ethernet cords going into the crawlspace and install them up there.

ftfy. Sure you can do what op has said in terms of making a bunch of networks with the same SSID, but that relies on the device being smart enough to hop between them. I have yet to see one that is.

I'd stay a way from Cisco and look at Ubiquiti's Unifi range of APs. They are enterprise grade but are priced very disruptively, though all APs work on the having Ethernet run throughout the home where you plan to place the APs. 

 

If your home isn't setup like that then Ubiquiti also came out with a product called the Amplifi which is geared more towards the home user that wants a mesh wireless network that is more powerful than your ordinary router solutions.

Layer 3 roaming is handled by the network, so I was agreeing with you. I was also saying you could clone a bunch of SSID's but that relies on the endpoint (laptop/phone) being smart enough to jump between them, I have yet to see this happen effectively. Let the network do it, the device can be dumb as a door knob and it will actually work.

1. I agree with you. I am just telling you how it is done in enterprise. 

2. they are using layer 3 roaming, this is the technical term to have the network decide which AP each client should connect to.

3. The end points are presented with a single 'AP'.

4. You could setup 50+ SSID's, and have them all called the same. This tends not to work however, as it realize on the client being smart enough to hop between the AP's. its short fall can be overcome, but it requires a lot of network engineering.
