What's is the current generation and sockets and chipset etc

So I didn't really follow much intel new stuff and I'm looking at maybe doing a completely full build. I also see DDR4 is out so... what's the CPUs to get and chipsets and sockets... for example, what's the current gen equivalent to the 4670k, what I have currently.

Here's a quick rundown of today's present sockets:

Intel:

- LGA 1151. For Intel's Skylake processors and the architecture after them, Kaby Lake. Support Dual Channel DDR4 and only low voltage DDR3 (slots not compatible). Mainstream use, CPUs up to 4 physical / 8 logical cores. Compatible processors: Core i3/5/7 6000 series, Xeon E3 V5

- LGA 2011-3. For high-performance applications, LGA 2011-3 is the high-end chipset in Intel's lineup. Support Quad Channel DDR4 and low voltage DDR3. Supports CPUs up to 10 physical / 20 logical cores in the Core i7 form and up to 22 / 44 cores in Xeon E5 workstation chips. Compatible processors: i7 5800/5900 and 6800/6900 series, Xeon E5 V3 and E5 V4

AMD:

- Socket AM3+. Host for the FX series of CPUs. Support Dual Channel DDR3, largely outdated and due to be replaced with Socket AM4 Q4 2016 / Q1 2017. Support up to 8 Bulldozer / Excavator / Piledriver modules (8 integer cores, 4 floating point units). Compatible processors: All current AMD FX-4000, 6000, 8000.

- Socket FM2+. Host for the Bulldozer / Excavator / Piledriver based Athlon series CPUs and all APUs (CPUs with large on-die graphics processors). Support Dual Channel DDR3, also due to be replaced by Socket AM4 which will host all new AMD CPUs as of today. Support up to 4 modules (4 integer, 2 FPU). Compatible Processors: Athlon x4 600, 700, 800 series, A6- A8- and A10- series APUs.

- Socket AM1. Low-power, entry-level socket for AMD APUs. Very cheap socket / chipset, Support Single Channel DDR3. CPUs up to 4 modules, powers no higher than 65W. Compatible processors: AMD Athlon 5150/5350, Sempron 3650/3850.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Hmmm ok...

So let's say I'm looking for a new MOBO and CPU and maybe RAM. What would you recommend? Nothing crazy but would like to say some option for good performance. Like compared to a i5 4670 I have, preferably non k as I don't overclock. Or one with equivalent to a i7 4770.

Well, if you're using an i5-4670 you're fine for a while, the newest processors are only 15% faster at best. And the best performance increases only become available if you overclock.

But if you're adamant,

I know it's just I'm probably getting a 1070 and a HTC vive and I really love building so might as well go super fresh. My current build was funded by my dad as a gift but now I'm going all out. Not unlimited budget but I'm ready to go up to 2500$ CAD.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Make sure to post in the New Builds and Planning forum if you're unsure of your best upgrade path, and happy VR gaming!

You could repurpose your current computer for someone else to do office tasks in, or as a HTPC.

I'll post there.

Yeah I think I'l give it to my dad, he has a shitty HP PC with Vista and I got 2 cases and 2 setups I can turn out for him, 250D, Air 240, Phanteks LS and h100i. Thinking of selling but looks hard to sell used PC parts if it either not RAM or a GPU...

AM3+ also supports the FX 9000 series CPUs.

But considering that the 9000 series are essentially slightly modified 8000 series I guess that could be excluded.

That's exactly why I forgot them xD

Yeah, the FX 9000s are just higher clocked 8000s. They're not a real series of GPUs.

They're like if EVGA took the 980 Ti K|NGP|N and called it the GTX 990 Ti
