old gpu

RX 480 would probably be 2-3 times faster. Though 7870 is fine for 1080p low-medium

It's much newer, built on the 14nm Samsung LPP design vs the 28nm process of the 7870. It's also GCN 4 vs GCN 1 and packs MUCH more stream processors and compute units.

According to "leaks" and were the RX-480 is priced it should yield performance similar to the GTX 970 and GTX 980 or inbetween, wich are much more faster cards than the 7870

thanks bruh. really quick question
but how does the gpu industry thing work, Im building a new rig, and im planning on getting the rx 480, and on new egg, there are different brands, such as GIGABYTE and SAPPHIRE, whats the difference? would the price be more expensive than the $199 that was told for the 4gb? I dont really understand the process.

The difference is the cooler. Currently only the reference blowers are available for pre-order but I'd advise you to stay away from Asus and Gigabyte due to poor customer support. Get Sapphire, MSI or XFX preferably. As for the VRAM - 8GB as 4GB is quickly becoming a problem in some games

So on release I should expect relatively same prices?

The 8GB is supposed to be around $250-280 at max and the 4GB is supposed to be around $220 at max (guessing from price leaks)

Now hold on there partner. While I agree you're foolish to not get the 8g model unless there is a large price disparity, 4g is not quickly becoming a problem. I just picked up Primal and in the benchmark with everything set to ultra and the Texture pack loaded I didn't cross 3g of usage out of my 6g available.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

And I run my games at 1440. Games use what's available not a set amount, breaching 4g is only an issue if you only have 4g. And I've never seen someone with 4g have a problem. Worst case scenario you pull back on the textures.

Very important though, I agree on getting the 8g version. Just don't follow that the sky is falling for those with 4g...

This x1000000.

People freak out when they see games using close to their max memory. This is not an issue unless you are really pushing beyond your limitation (say 2gb). The card doesn't just stop working, it knows how to handle memory pretty well. I too agree that for the rumored price difference the 8gb is kind of a no brainer though.

Actually - lot's of people, even on LTT, have been complaining about VRAM with 970s - just use the search function. Also, it's MUCH better to have excess VRAM than not enough as when you run out you go from 60fps to 2fps - that is what happens with 2GB 960s at 1080p if you push ultra textures - stutter city. Same reason why Mirror's Edge Catalyst simply does not allow the 970 to run ultra - not cause it can't handle it - cause it drops to 18fps as opposed to the 390 which runs at 40+ due to it not being VRAM-limited. 4GB is the minimum you want at 1080p and preferably 6-8GB at 1440p/4K

That's not the point of contention. HUGE disparity between 2g and 4g. No developer in their right mind would launch a game that didn't run perfectly fine on a card with 4g of available memory. People forget a little thing called settings... There is no reason to freak out because all the sliders aren't all the way to the right. Those sliders are there so that you can match your card to the game. With 4g of memory available, even with the worst memory hog it's a simple adjustment of the textures to remedy any performance issues.

Yes - and a 390 can run Ultra vs a 970 which can only run high - that is what I was saying - more VRAM means more longevity.

And a 970 can handle higher Tessellation settings than a 390. Yet you have argued that those higher settings don't offer a noticeable effect on the game. And at 1080p texture quality has less of an effect than at higher resolutions.

Actually - there's a difference between high Tess and absurd Tess. GameWorks has 64x Tess - that is utterly useless and serves to gimp everything that is not Maxwell or modded Maxwell (Pascal)
