Upgraded graphics card for 2k gaming

Matt Grierson

So I currently have a MSI gtx 960 2Gb and i wanna upgrade it so i can play 2k at max settings. Should i get a used MSI 390x for $400 CAD or just wait for the 480 and go in crossfire? I could also buy a 1070 but they are impossible to come across right now

Answer should be a bit obvious. Wait until there's a decent stock of 1070s so you can purchase it.

What is the exact resolution you want to play at and what is the refresh rate of your monitor?

I have read that the 480 should have the power of a fury nano. That is enough for 2k gaming. We will not know until it comes out in a few days

So you think the 390x isn't really worth it?

A good 980ti will trade blows with a 1070. But it's an older card so you have to ask yourself if you're OK with that to save some money.

980ti and 1070 perform the same. Whichever is cheaper is the one you should get.

Most people refer to that resolution as 1440p, not 2K.

For 1440p @ 60Hz...

1080 - every game at ultra settings.

980Ti/1070 - nearly every game at ultra settings.

980/480 - most games at ultra settings.

970 - most games at high settings.

Best bang for the buck would be the RX 480 8GB once it comes out in a week, pending the benchmarks land where we think they will, ie just a hair under a 980.  If you have the money, a 1070 would be a great buy, but it might be a month or so before stock becomes available.

If your in Canada, wait on a 1070, you'll be getting gouged if you can even find one.  I would say play the waiting game, 390X will be a 400 paper weight in a week.

1070 is a much better option for 1440. The only thing I ever have to sacrifice to get well over 60 fps in any game is the AA to FXAA and sometimes the shadows to high.

Well for some reason people are still selling used 980ti's for $650+ and you can buy a brand new one for under $700 so hopefully they will lower their prices soon. The 1070 is sitting around $620 but they are all on backorder

True, but does the performance increase from a 480 to 1070 justify the nearly doubling in price?  For a most people, it's not which card works best, but which card works best that can fit within a certain budget.

Watch New Egg and other online retailers, there have been some amazing sales.

i would wait for decent 1070 stock. Prices should drop to around msrp , and by then we will know exactly what the 480 is capable of .
