  • And a miniatx MOBO depending on the socket and shite

Is there a point in getting a 480 when the rest of the computer can't keep up?

You'd be better off setting him up on a better platform, and allowing him to upgrade the GPU when he can afford it.

Don't stick him on a dead-end platform.

So:

Lower ram to 8gb

Get rid of SSD

Set him up on the LGA 1150

Get an i3 or something

Hyper Threading makes it basically a quad core

https://pcpartpicker.com/ is your friend.

Also, does this include monitor, mouse, keyboard, os? or is this just the system?

The RX 480 seems very over powered for this price point. At $200 (if we're lucky) you're at 40% of your budget.

The i3 has hyperthreading and will most likely beat out any AMD quad core cpu

Ok, noted....

If you have to buy something brand new $500 is a stretch. I don't see it being possible without getting really bad parts.

Like does he need a monitor too, keyboard/mouse.... no idea really.

Like I already have a monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers/headphones

If I upgrade I literally only need to change motherboard/cpu/ram (maybe) psu . I would keep my 970 for awhile unless it has issues. So my upgrade would be far less.

So the

i5-6500

would be a good choice if I scrapped the SSD and went with 8 gb of ram

Yea u don't need 16 gb of ram on a budget build. I5-6500 sounds pretty good though.
