1x8gb vs 2x4gb

I accidently got 1x8 gb stick of ram, my mobo only supports up to 8gb of ram- so no upgrade path is the performance gained by dual channel worth returning and rebuying 2x 4gb?

yes, a single stick will not run in dual channel so you are better of with 2x4gb

It's certainly preferable. Some programs run smoother with dual channel as opposed to single channel. And hell, since you've got not much of an upgrade path on your board you may as well fill up both slots anyway, really.

What MB do you have? Never heard of a modern board only supporting 8gb of ram.

Perhaps it only supports 8gb dimms so you can have 2x 8gb. Only supporting 8gb regardless of configuration would be a rather strange limitation.
