Go to solution Solved by vanished,

If you still have questions, we're still here :)

I see that most motherboards are listed as Z170, but some are X99.

what is the difference between these two types of motherboards, and why would one be better than the other?

Thanks so much!

Just to make sure I'm getting everything right here, the X99 platform supports the LGA 2011 socket, and is generally reserved for Xeons (except for intel extreme edition processors).

the Z170 platform is the general consumer grade platform, and supports LGA1150 & LGA 1151, right?

No, the Z170 chipset only supports the LGA 1151 'Skylake' socket. LGA 1150 would be Haswell and that would only be compatible with the H81, B85, H97 and Z97 chipsets.

However, you're correct on the X99 chipset.
