What would be good for my setup?

So what I'm getting out from this thread is that my onboard audio is enough for my speakers and if i wanted better quality from my speakers i would have to new ones since they are of poor quality?

and i should get an external DAC to increase the sound quality of my headphones ?

Yes, but you'll need an amp and a DAC with the headphones.

At the moment I'm using the onboard sound on my G1.sniper 5 motherboard and i find it quite underwhelming.

My audio setup consists of a pair of sennheiser HD558 headphones and a Logitech Z906 5.1 sound system.

I listen to music, game, and watch a lot of movies. i use my headphones at night and my speakers during the day since i live in an apartment so i cant be too loud at night.

I've looked at some soundcards and from what I've heard the phoebus or essenc STX are the things to look in to.

they are both the same price where im from so price isnt an issue, it's just the hardware differences im interested in.

so would buying one of these soundcards be the best way to improve my soundquality and if so, which soundcard would be the best for my personal setup?

budget is about 300-400$ it depends what i have to buy and how much it would improve my experience

Like seriously, you might think everyone suggests it blindly but an E10 would do you fine.

Before you do anything, strut your way over to that FAQ thread stickied on top of the audio subforum. It will explain why you don't need a sound card.

IIRC, your board has an interchangeable OP amp, you could make it even easier and just upgrade that.

From Gigabyte's website: http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4487#OP-AMP%20support%20list

Haha, I would think the on-board on that MOBO would be efficient enough for some Logitech speakers, and a pair of 558's.

Don't drop $300-400 on new audio equipment when you are using 558's, which aren't very demanding and no offense; half-ass Logitech speakers. Get new headphones first.

Get a pair of DT990's or 770's if you want closed, AKG 701, or ATH-AD700x. Try your new headphones on your on-board if you then feel you need something more to power them then get a O2/ODAC combo, and FiiO E10, or if it were up to me a TubeMagic D1 Plus.

Here are some links to some of the headphones

You're onboard solution should fine for the speakers, but if you want to get a better listening experience out of your headphones I'd look at an Amp/DAC.

id say the e10 instead of the e17....  e17 is a portable combo
