Windows 10 Automatic Update Experience

I've wanted to make a post about this for a while so I have somewhere to point people when the topic comes up, and I also want to get feedback from the community, since I know my experience is (apparently, and unfortunately) atypical.  Perhaps this will also turn into a place where people can help each other get things configured.

I already have a guide about configuring automatic updates, but this is not that.  This is just describing in detail what a typical update experience is like for me.

1

When updates are available, I get a message saying that they've been installed and that a reboot is needed.  It looks something like this (I searched for far too long to find this picture :D)

Restart-Required.png

2

If I ignore it, the computer will reboot at the time that it has already scheduled.  This has never failed to be some time during the late night/early morning (like 3 AM) that, historically, I am not using the PC.  Thus, a good time to do the reboot.  If I click it, it opens the Settings app where I have additional options that look something like this:

Capture.PNG

Notice how I can pick a different time and date if the one suggested isn't good for me?  If I recall correctly, the times offered allow you to delay this reboot by up to a week!  That ought to do it! ;)

3

If I choose to not change the time, and I forget and end up being on the PC later than Windows was expecting, it will remind me as the reboot is approaching with a message similar to the first one about the fact that a reboot is scheduled.

4 (sort of)

I fold almost 24/7 and having that running seems to prevent Windows from restarting.  I will often come back the morning after a reboot was scheduled to a message about it having failed to restart.  It is clear to me by the overall state of my system than it just continued running through the attempt and nothing odd happened.  It didn't crash, reboot, or anything else.  Windows just says "oh, looks like something's running.  Well I guess we'll just mention this and not try rebooting".

5

When I do finally restart, it greets me with a message something like this:

03-Windows-10-Action-Center.jpg

Conclusion

Overall I would describe it like this:

  • A vast improvement over previous versions of Windows
  • Friendly, and accommodating
  • Always works, easily, and never caused me any troubles.

I want to hear from other people because I've seen people that claim to get popups like the one below and I don't know why their Windows is being so mean :P

I really like the idea that Windows Updates automagicly myself, it REALLY makes my job as a computer technician or IT Admin 10x easier.  BUT, I will say 1 thing that I REALLY dislike to a firey passion....  Is HOW it updates now.  Anytime you get a major update, like the 1511 update, it does not just simply "update".  It will download a WHOLE ISO image and reinstall Windows via a "Custom Upgrade" install.  Which renders my drivers POINTLESS AS ALL FUCK causing me to:

1. Uninstall all of my drivers

2. Reinstall all of my drivers

3. Pray to GabeN that they use different libraries or the libraries that are the same haven't been altered in some magical way

4. Reinstall Windows because fuck this shit.

Other than that, tincy-wincy little bit...

Well I've been on Win8.1 for quite some time now, I have been reluctant to upgrade to Win10, and when the gwx.exe thing scheduled the upgrade for me I let it go but then it got stuck so I freaked out. A couple weeks later, I'm trying again but this time with a fresh install. Formatted the main partition so hopefully all goes well or I'll have to install Ubuntu and then try to get Win8.1 back.

Lenovo puts on some random partitions that are hidden to the OS but I left its partition system in place and just clicked format on the former partition that hosted the OS.

I skimmed through, alas W10 is almost installed but oddly hasnt prompted me for a key yet. I'm doing as fresh of an install as I can think. I formatted the drive that W8.1 was on.

Yes, I do. I was upgrading a laptop. I'm guessing it must've been able to pull a key because yeah it seems like W10 is completely activated and won't accept the old W8.1 key.

Windows will automatically look in the UEFI where your product key is stored.  It runs that script BEFORE it ask you for a key.

Ah okay, well that's good to know. I had downloaded an Insider Preview ISO of Windows 10 Education from MS to try in a VM, because the last time I had used Windows 10 was during its Insider Preview days (specifically Build 10074) and it was okay. But now it's pretty good. But yeah the fresh install looks to have gone well. So now this PC that came with 8.1 is now up to date.
