So I know virtually nothing about dual msi cards. But i have an r9 380 4G and im excited about the new cards coming out and im curious if i could use the new mid range one with my soon to be old mid range card (My 380). Go easy on me if this is a Dumb question with an easy answer. Cheers!

Its true its best to get the identical card for best performance with Crossfire/multi-card systems.

You're crushing my dreams.

You don't exactly need an identical card. They just need to be using the same GPU micro-architecture.

for an example, you can Crossfire a R9-280X and a HD 7970.

Both cards use the 'Tahiti XT' core.

In fact you can Crossfire  any of these together (since they are either *full* 'Tahiti XT' or a cut-down version)

  • R9-280X
  • R9-280
  • HD 7970 (normal or "GHz Edition")
  • HD 7950 (normal or "Boost Edition")
  • HD 7990 (2x 7970's)

IF any of the newer cards will be based on the same 'Antigua' / 'Tonga' GPU core, then you could run them in Crossfire with your existing R9-380. For now, only these cards will work in crossfire with your R9-380 4GB:

  • R9-285
  • R9-380 (both 2GB and 4GB variants)
  • R9-380X (both 2Gb and 4GB variants)

As mentioned by @CommanderAlex, getting a second R9-380 4GB (from any brand) would give you the most optimal performance. Core and Memory clock speeds do not need to be the same -- the cards can operate in Crossfire asynchronously.
