i have a Dell Optiplex 960 Core 2 Duo 8GB DDR2(lol) running a Radeon HD 5450 512MB. So what i want to do is upgrade the video card but am not sure how to go about it since i cant use the motherboard in another case and its the SFF model i could use a PCI-e extension cable and hook up to a PCI-e rise and make a few mods to the case. See the thing is im running two hard drives in this and im only running a 250W power supply can and will i have to upgrade my power supply but not have it plugged into the system just jump the pins and only have the video card plugged in? All this will look horrible but my games will look better and more playable!

Here are some links to what i am talking about and the video card i might think about getting:http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-Express-PCI-E-16X-Riser-Card-Flex-Flexible-Ribbon-Extender-Extension-Cable-/310487210028?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item484a7ad82c

It should work, but if I were you, I would only use one extender(flexible) so the latency isn't slowed down as much. Make sure the GPU won't be bottlenecked by the system though.

so you saying since im only a dual core i should think of a lesser graphics card? only games i play are League of Legends and Minecraft but i would like to be able to play Battlefield 3 and 4 when it comes out.

You'd want a better cpu for BF3/4. Also, a 250w psu will not be enough for a 660 Ti.

You're looking at a near full system upgrade here.

$800 is plenty for quite a hefty system/upgrade: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1JoW1

Crossfire ready. I'm assuming you're using your old hdd's.

alright that seems legit i like that and gives a little room for improvment down the line. Now is that one of AMD's newer cpus? What would i be able to compare it to from the Intels..FX8320

It's basically a lower binned version of AMD's best cpu. It will be plenty for gaming and compares to intel's i5.

Gaming wise, it's comparable to the I5-3570K. If you overclock it to 4.5+GHZ, you'll get even better performance. The 7950, on the other hand, can run Battlefield 3 on Ultra @1080p and produce about 60fps. BF4 shouldn't be too much different. Also, if you're going to get a 7950, get one that overclocks well, like the Gigabyte Windforce version, or the Sapphire Vapor X. If you overclock both the CPU and GPU, you should see performance increases of 10-25%.

I agree with all of these components, well chosed @WoodenMarker

As you were already suggested you should build a new system, BF3 and BF4 I'm 90% sure that it will not run on that old CPU. :)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12; GPU: GeForce RTX 3080 Gigabyte Vision OC V2 10GB; PSU: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified; RAM: 4x32GB (w/RGB xd); SSD: 1xM.2 Samsung 980 Pro 1TB, 1xM.2 Samsung 970 Pro 1TB, 1xWD 6TB HDD; OS: 10; Monitor: 1xAorus IPS 27" (2560x1400) 1xBenq IPS 32" 4kKeyboard: Corsair K95; Mouse: Logitech G Pro X Superlight w/ Steelseries QcK mousepad.

  • 1 month later...

well that is the thing i dont really have the income to build right now...long story short i cant prove that i am a US citizen so nobody will hire me without an ID or Social card can't get either one without proof so in the mean time while I'm waiting i just want a better graphics card than what i have are there any better low profile cards that DO NOT require a 6 or 8 pin connector?

EDIT: I always do this i ask questions and then do my research but i checked out the lower end card that amd just put out and here is a link http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=r7&N=-1&isNodeId=1

now seeing that these are pcie 3.0 my mobo is 2.0 as far as i know 3.0 is compatible with 2.0 my question is how bad if any will the performance hit be even though my cpu doesn't support 3.0

A 7750 would be the best low profile card you can get.

The 240 is terrible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sph6cjJeRdI

Pci-e 2.0 won't bottleneck anything. Gpus have yet to saturate it completely.

Possibly. I've read about others who have done it but it depends on your psu. See if it works.

You can put in a Radeon HD 6570 I think, I'm sure there is a low profile version but your problem will be the PSU, I was considering buying one of those a few years ago and I think they come with a 200w cheap generic PSU.

I personally wouldn't bother mate, save a little money and buy a better used PC.

now in about 6-8 months i should have around $1000 saved up what would be a good start on my first build, i took the build suggested above and changed a few things like cpu and case i really want that case but any will do as long as i can put a h100 in it later on http://pcpartpicker.com/user/monkanowski/saved/2uss but if you have anything in mind that would have better performance for around the same price range and i am a little sketchy about AMD cpus i tend to favor Intel more

Nothing sketchy about AMD cpus. It's not worth paying more for the higher binned 8350 and a h100i just for gaming. You're paying a lot for parts that don't help much for performance.

do you even realize how fast gaming is changing compared to 2007-2009? I think its worth the higher 8350

well the price difference isn't much at all around 40 bucks and to be honest the only games i really play are League of Legends and Minecraft BF3 or 4 would just be a nice thing to be able to play....ive tried on my current setup just isn't going to happen but i love it
