i've actually encountered A LOT of things where doing a thing trough UI is actually more complicated and scary than just opening the terminal and editing a config file, without even me having any idea if i was even editing the right thing.

 

on top of that, as much as the linuxy folks like to scream drivers got a lot better, i'd be using linux right now if i had propper audio drivers. but unfortunately something is causing them to crap out, and i was unable to use anything but one of the jacks on the back that wasnt even meant to be the headphone out. oh, and did i mention already i was unable to change volume as well? i spent an entire day diving trough the very user friendly looking UI, changing settings that didnt seem to do anything, let alone solve my problems.

That's interesting. I use Ubuntu (and formerly Kubuntu) for my HTPC. I found the audio a massive improvement over Windows. Windows's audio system is an absolute mess, and Ubuntu's simply works.  Also, while I'm ranting about Windows, Bluetooth has been nothing but a pain on Windows, but it just works on Linux. Same with Xbox 360 and Dualshock 3 controllers, too.

 

I will say that KDE/Plasma is, apart from display scaling and arguably aesthetic, much better than Unity in terms of GUI in my experience, though both were incredibly easy as far as audio went.

well if non technical people were introduced to Linux it is possible this would happen, the forums would be flooded by people who don't know what they are doing, however i did start linux when i had no idea what i was doing and i love it iv'e learned so much over the past two years but if... lets say a million people joined linux when they had no idea what they were doing the forums would turn into the windows ten forums, flooded with people that don't know what a power button is. This is just a worse case scenario

Linux is thought of as the "more advanced" and/or "harder to use" OS because it isn't as mainstream as Windoze or Mac. And people are not accustomed to change so a Windoze user might find Linux as overly complicated and a Linux user will find Mac expensive. One thing to remember is that whether it is Linux, Mac or Windoze, they're tools to do a job. Why change the tools if they could do the job fine? Also some people might prefer one tool to another to perform the same job.

 

I always find the statement that Linux can't get viruses funny. It's like Mac, people used to think that Mac can't get viruses but heck look around nowadays, they're getting targeted now that there's enough people using it. Linux can get viruses too but there's just not that much of them targeting consumer machines. Probably due to it being so dang hard to get things working on them in the first place.

 

End of the day, they're just tools. You can go facebook with either one of these 3 OSes, you could edit videos or play games with them and you could certainly get buttloads of malware and viruses on all of them if you're not careful enough. I prefer Linux for not getting in the way (once everything is set up), my mom wouldn't touch anything that's not Mac and my brother like Windoze because of the wide selection of games.

The Internet is invented by cats. Why? Why else would it have so much cat videos?

Fun fact Microsoft owns Unix rights and that is why they can put native Ubuntu in Windows 10.
