upgrading ;)

Go to solution Solved by Jacktastic-Mofo,

I'd also like to add that 10 gig switches are INCREDIBLY expensive, and 10 gig nics are even more expensive, unless you have a RAID array of SSD that might be able to saturate that 10 gig line you're wasting money.

so i am upgrading my netwok in my house. it has way to many dead zones and now i have some time to fix that  so my plan is to buy 2 ubiti wireless accecs points a new router and a 16 port swich to fix it. my ISP (internet serves provider) provids  a router that has 5.0 and 2.4 bands and ethernet. currently that and a 5 port swich is used for  most things. my house is wired for cat 6 to most of the rooms so i wont have to run many cables my self but i want to have active ethernet ports in every room and be able to use the wireless in every room.

so i need help on a few things:

1. a 10 gig router

2. a cheep 10 gig 16 port swich

thank you for all your help but i kinda need 10 gig stuff sorry for being picky

Why do you need a 10 gig switch? do any of your devices in your house have 10 gig nics? and I'm assuming you don't even have a 1 gig up / down from your ISP.

future proofing

To no longer need a 1 gigabit switch will be many years down the line for consumers, I've considered doing 10 gig between my PC and my server, but that's only because I edit 1080p and 4k video right off the server from my workstation.

future proofing

How people can't learn that future proofing is bullshit?

Today, you will spend thousands of $ for a basic 10Gb network setup and most of it will be for bragging rights. When state of technology will be at the point of where a regular household will benefit from 10Gb networking, it will be as cheap (or even cheaper) as the 1Gb setup is today. And it won't even take a lot of work to upgrade: throwing out router and replacing it with higher speed one will take you less than an hour.

Man you got it right there. I use 10g, but only because I work for an ssd company, and we are designing a 1pb san appliance. 10g is only for testing and doing video editing. The only other use for 10g at the moment is in datacenters. In a cloud enviornment, high transfer speed between compute nodes and storage servers must be high, otherwise performance will suffer. I should mention that sfp+ nics can be had for as little as $15 on ebay, and will perform at full 10g speeds. The switches, on the other hand, will cost hundreds. So for a small san, you could just do direct-attach to all of the clients.
