I would not recommend getting 1080s from 980Ti SLI. You will not see much of a performance boost.

It would be, it's just that that's most likely overkill for whatever you might have planned, and SLI has issues.

Do you really need it though, what resolution/frame rate are you planning on using, I would probably go with 1080 SLI if you're going to get into VR as supersampling helps alot with image quality and can be really demanding in something like project cars. But I'm pretty sure VR SLI is not possible atm so a single card would have to be used and simultaneous multiprojection really helps a lot with VR performance but I think the game would have to support it again .

Two 980tis will last until Volta and beyond. I don't know what you are doing but that would be insane overkill

I can tell you that you definitely should not use SLI 980 Tis just to run PhysX

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

The 1070 is rather similar in performance to a 980 ti, winning in most cases by a little bit, though this can be tipped by overclocking.  Would you upgrade from 1070 SLI to 1080 SLI if you had that?  I wouldn't.

 

Like you said (implied), the 980 tis are worth more to you if you use them than if you sell them.
