WiFi problems: Packet loss, slow internet, location and time based?

Windows2000
Go to solution Solved by samcool55,

A decent 5Ghz router should fix it.

If every device you have also supports that and there aren't too many walls in the way you should be fine.

The problem is that every router is comparable to a shouting person.

The more there are, the more difficult it is to talk to something (your devices).

Also it's sometimes fine because the other routers don't have any data to transfer so they are quiet.

But when everyone is home and using their wifi, it's just a complete mess of everyone just yelling at each other.

Result, end devices can't understand a thing what's been send so it's a complete mess.

Of course the further you are the worse it gets.

The processing power doesn't matter, it's how strong the antenna is. It's comparable to how loud your router can yell.

So I live in an apartment and I have 3 computers and a couple of mobile devices. The thing is, the router is placed near the end of the house (living room) and it has to be. (The cable jack is only at the end of the house...)
The WiFi works fine in the living room and in one of the rooms, but is completely unusable on the other.
The main things I've noticed are:

  • Less devices connected are helpful but doesn't completely fix the problem
  • My apartment channels are completely crowded (see pic)
  • Ping is unstable making gaming a nightmare (In a ticking manner, see pic)
  • WiFi is completely free of lag at some points of the day (ex. 1-7AM, 3-4PM)
  • Switching the channels helps, sometimes.

The distance between the router and the room is about 20 feet at best. I really don't see why it should lag at all.
I will point out that I have a 2.4ghz single band router which I'm speculating is the problem but what can possibly be interfering with the connection to the extent where it only works within 10 feet of the router?

**I do think that getting a new router would help but would any 5ghz dual band router be fine, or do I need to look into the processing power of these routers?

Cheers!

Classic wifi channel congestion. Not a damn thing you can do about it... 5ghz is a clearer wider spectrum, but it also has abysmal range. The only way around this is going to be some macguyvering a hardline to your room. Whether it be drill a hole in the base of the wall, tack it to the wall etc..
