Hey guys. Not sure where to start here, so I'll just explain the issue I'm having, then tell you the steps I've taken so far. I have the FX-8300 as you can see in the title. Well, I've been getting a lot of BSOD's for Clock Watchdog Timeout. It doesn't even blue screen all the time, sometimes the whole computer just locks up, and I have to manually kill the power. This happens entirely at random. Sometimes I'll go 3-4 weeks without an issue, and sometimes it will happen 5-6 times within an hour. As I said, it happens seemingly at random. I've had it happen while playing games, I've had it happen while browsing Chrome, I've even had it happen while simply going through my file browser. I'm running at base clock speed. (I've had it overclocked in the past, but I've run it at base frequency for about the past 6 months, since I got my new mobo)

I talked to AMD Care on Twitter, and they told me to try disabling C1E, C6, and "Cool and Quiet" in the BIOS, which I did. It hasn't stopped it from happening though. They told me to just post the issue on their forums, which the only help I've gotten was someone telling me to do what AMD already suggested. I looked up the issue, and they attribute it to a possible hardware issue where one core may be dead.

Does anyone know how I can find out WHICH core is corrupt, and how to disable it? I'm running an Asus M5A97 R2.0 mobo, so I have their nice little UEFI GUI for my BIOS. If you need any further information, I'll be glad to provide all I can.

Thank you for any help!

Considering the core setup on amd chips (1 fpu + 2 integer per module),  it doesn't make sense to me for just one core to be malfunctioning.  2 would make sense,  but not 1.

Maybe try applying slightly more voltage? Your cpu might require more than what the mobo supplies at stock for some reason.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Since you're using a AM3+ socket is there ANY older AMD CPU you have laying around? If I recall correctly AM3+ has mad backwards compatibility. I think it'll support as far back as AM2+ CPUs. Try running the system with a different one if you can. If you still have issues then the CPU isn't at fault.

Yeah, sorry, I forgot they share a FPU. You're probably right, it's probably 2. Okay, could you recommend a voltage? I'm at 1.152v right now.

I wish I did. Trust me, I'd put a downgraded CPU in right now, if it meant that it would at least WORK. Already had a couple files go corrupt from it locking up at inopportune moments.

Maybe try 1.2v. Imo less could also work,  but 1.2v would be safe.

Okay, I just don't want to risk frying it. I am running the stock cooler.

I really don't have any experience with amd cpus and coolers,  so just check temps when you determine the voltage.

But 1.15v seems low for an fx chip imo

Alright, I'll give it a shot. If I'm not back in 15 minutes, send in search and rescue! :D

Well, I just increased the voltage to 1.5. It's not fried yet, but it is running around 62C at idle, so I'm not sure if that's good or bad...but at least it isn't near 90C.

did you scour the board manufacturers site for bios updates or any other updates that might help with this problem on this board...... or look for anything else which may help the board run properly?

is the right bios installed for this cpu?

I think it is? I'll try updating my BIOS....but fyi, I've never done this before, so that makes me a little nervous, honestly.
