Hi everyone, new here!

I want to build a PC which I will be using for video editing 80% of the time at 1080p/60fps and the other 20% editing and rendering at 4K, with the occasional GTA V gaming.

My friend does a similar thing but he has more knowledge than me. Now my budget is roughly $1000-1300 MAX (but the cheaper the better.. I guess?)

Is my friends PC (specs below) good enough? Should I copy his exact build? I believe he spent roughly $1600-1800 on it.

By the way this is Australian Dollars! not USD!

Also, is a GPU 100% necessary in my case? I always render with CPU instead of GPU, but my friends build is a 5820k so no integrated graphics..

Any help is appreciated! Thank you. :)

Friends specs:

Case:
DeepCool Tesseract SW USB 3.0 Case without PSU

CPU:
Intel Core i7 5820K 3.3Ghz

Cooling:
Coolermaster Hyer D92

Motherboard:

ASRock X99 Extreme3 X99 S2011-3 4xDDR4/3xPCI-E/Intel GBLan/ATX Motherboard

Ram:
Kingston HyperX FURY 8GB kit (4Gx2)
Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB kit (48x2)
Total = 24GB Ram

PSU:
Antec 850w Current Gamer HCG-850M

Harddrive:
W.D 3.5" Blue 1TB SATA3 64M 7200rpm HDD

GPU:
MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G

P.S, in terms of overall editing, rendering & gaming performance does Intel thrash even an 8 core AMD based PC? What are the differences. The prices are hugely different where I live so I'm kinda skeptical haha!

That cpu would demolish AMD 8300 which is one of thier 8 core cpus, and remember, the i7s have hyper threading and also effectivly have 8 cores which are MUCH faster than the AMD cores.  The cores dont always matter, the consoles have 8 core processors, and look at them lol.

CPU - Intel I3-6100 Motherboard - MSI Z170-A PRO RAM G.SKILL NT Series 8gb 2400MZ DDR4 GPU - Power Color R9 380X Case - NZXT Source 220 Window Storage - 1TB Western Digital Blue PSU - Corsair CX500 OS - Windows 10 Pro

Ayyy high five brother, good to see another Aussie. In terms of video processing, the CPU should definitely be an Intel, now this is not from a fan-boy perspective but purely an objective input.

Haha nice to see, well for sure my decision is with Intel. But should I really copy his build? Also why is that PSU not good? Is 850W not enough?

No they don't like the brand. Id also get the same sizer memory, so get 16 or 32, not 24. Id also get a ssd.

Oh okay, I found a forum before which showed it was a tier two PSU so I thought it was good. I'll look into it. That being said I'm trying to reduce costs not increase them, so an SSD is probably off the cards for now :/

Your probably better off geting a 6700k and a ssd rather than a 5820k. Id also think a 6700k might be better for you.

I agree + SSD makes a worlds difference in video editing, even if you have a budget you should at least try to fit in a cheap one.

Hmmm, I'm torn between a 6700k and a 5280k.. I know that it's probably better to get a 6700k because at the moment I can't afford a GPU so it's nice to have some intergrated graphics.

Okay so this is what I've put together.

Thoughts?

Also, might be a stupid question but is a GPU necessary or will it improve video editing speeds/performance whilst editing/rendering?

Thanks :D

OKAY, now I'm done for sure. :D

Thoughts? should I build a 5820K or 6700K based PC.. For video editing mainly as I stated before..

Edit: based on this PC I built vs my friend's one, which do you think will out perform which? Thanks all!

The i7 5820K will perform better if you can make use of the extra cores, but it will be more expensive to build.

The NEX psu's are a bit average. The Antec HCG 620W would do fine.

Also you can save by going with the non 'k' cpu as you have a B150 chipset board. Also the Coolermaster Hyper 212 would be cheaper for a locked cpu.

That board also only supports 2133MHz ram so the 2400MHz kit will drop down. Go with a 2133 if it is cheaper, and low profile if you go with an air cooler (Corsair vengeance ram or Kingston fury ram etc).

If you stick with Skylake then you can always try without a gpu to start with. I don't really know much about video editing as it isn't something I do. If you are wanting to play games though, then a gpu is a must.

Welcome to the forums!

1) You don't need to copy his exact build. Because you're editing 1080P videos most of the time, you can get away with a cheaper build.

2) A GPU is not 100? necessary, but a mediocre GPU will benefit greatly in GPU accelerated workloads and gaming.

So if your main uses are 1080P video editing with some GTA V (not at max settings), this will be an excellent build for the money. :D

The problem is that this is an nVidia product and scoring any nVidia product a "zero" is also highly predictive of the number of nVidia products the reviewer will receive for review in the future.

I wasn't wrong. It's extremely rare that I am. I provided sources as well. Different devs can disagree. Further, we now have confirmed discrepancy from Twitter about he use of the pre-release 1080 driver in AMD's demo despite the release 1080 driver having been out a week prior.

You apparently haven't seen his responses to questions on YouTube. He is very condescending and aggressive in his comments with which there is little justification. He acts totally different in his videos. I don't necessarily care for this content style and there is nothing really unique about him or his channel. His endless dick jokes and toilet humor are annoying as well.
