If it really is unused, sure good deal. That's the price for a new i5 4460 or so (well, little more) for a newer CPU you can overclock (providing you have the motherboard for it)

But kind of weird you buy something and after that ask if it was smart :P

I would NOT buy a used CPU. By "used" I mean any CPU that has the packaging open. This is because you do not know what the people who had it before you did with it. They could have touched the gold plates and still like that. A CPU is a very sensitive piece of equipment.

Were you the person who put their cpu back in your motherboard with thermal paste on the gold plates after several people warned you not to?

A cpu is probably one of the better items to buy used. As long as it wasn't over volted, or spilled on it should last way longer than it's relevance in the market.

I put it back into the motherboard because the thermal paste had no metallic particles..

And when you buy the CPU used, you do not know its condition until it is delivered.

Thats why ebay money back garatee exists. If the thing you buy does not work as the seller said, they give your money back.

Which turns an extemely bad idea into merely a bad one.

And yes, ebay's money back guarantee is really good for that, although it still sucks waiting for it to arrive to find out it is doa and having to hassle the return.  Going through it right now, but it is better than Craigslist where you're stuck with no recourse of something breaks.  Although CL is usually local, so if you don't test before buying it is your own fault.
