No doubt that with the OS, some programs, and some personal files you'll be using a good portion of it.  I would look into alternatives that cost less.  This type of machine is always getting more popular.

I really love the Surface Book except for price. If money was no object I would go to the store and buy a surface book today.

Which brings me to the surface pro 4. I like it a lot but I prefer Surface Book.

Do I buy the Surface Pro 4 i5, 8Gb 256GB SSD for $1299 + $129 (Total $1428) Type cover OR $1699 for Surface Book 256GB, i5, 8GB?

Money is a bit of an issue. If I get the Surface Book it'll take longer to save up for it.

Thanks :).

What sort of work will you be doing with them?

Some programming,

Word, Excel, powerpoint, publisher(loads of typing)

Occasional CAD (the software I'm using runs on i5s and core m5 just fine).

Web browsing - Lots of this.

Occasional tablet use with UWP apps. Mostly use as a laptop.

As I said. I would get the Book except for it's price.

I either pay $11800 HKD for the Pro 4 OR $13200 for the Surface Book

Otherwise I can pay around $11800-12000 for the 128Gb model but I'm afraid I'll run out of storage

Why not look at the Razer Blade stealth? i7, same storage, 8gb ram and 4k screen.. For the cheaper than the Book.

I have a pro 3 and it is really uncomfortable to use on your lap as a laptop with the type cover and the book is really over priced..

I don't buy Razer products and that's a laptop for gamers.

In 99% of situations I will never use the device on my lap. It'll be on a desk of some description.

I can afford the book easily if I get the 128Gb model. The question then is should I get a 128GB SB, a 256GB SB (way more expensive) or a 256GB SP4?

@GoodBytes  and @Ryan_Vickers I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

Woah, whats with the stereotypical view..

Razer is just a brand.. And it's an ultrabook, this laptop is designed for portability and power at  good price.

But it's up to you.

I suggest the 128GB book, unless you plan on storing huge files on the device, the 128GB will be plenty of space..

You know for ~$200 you can get a REALLY nice dock for a Surface Pro 4.  That way "on the go" you get amazing portability, and when you're and home you can get down and dirty.

Do you require any of the (semi)unique features of these devices, like the wacom pen or the ability to fold/separate into a tablet?  If not, I'd look at another device, since both the ones you listed are rather expensive for the hardware you get imo.

The pen would be great, I want a 2 in 1 device which can be a tablet or laptop.

And I love the surface book. 'm just not sure if I can survive with 128GB or ask my mom to pay $2000 HKD more.

128 GB is kind of tight. But both the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book have card readers.  Do you know if the card sticks out when inserted or not?  If it doesn't, would you consider that as a cheap way to expand mass storage?

according to Linus's review, the card sticks out a bit. I probably will be able to fit everything onto 128GB but I'm just worrited about how long this will last since it's an expensive investment. I'm worried that over time the 128Gb will come close to completely filling up.

I'll try my luck and ask for $13,000 total........

I'll report back if I can't........

EDIT: I might just take a detour after work experience and see the local pricing in a retail store for both.

EDIT 2: Most likely gonna get the Surface pro 4 actually The Book is just too expensive :(.
