I am building my first PC and need help with the component choice. In particular the monitor. I am currently looking at the acer Xb270H. My parts list is attached and is in australian dollars. The total with shipping ends up with 2277.

I am primarily using his pc for gaming but will use it for CAD programs such as Catia and Autodesk as well as Maya. I am a first time PC builder but dont want to upgrade this PC every year or two. I need to access my files reasonably fast and want my programs to run smooth.

I will be able to upgrade in the future but only if this machine isn't cutting it.

Any helpful comments would be greatly appreciated.

970 should be replaced with a 1070 as well you have a Z170 motherboard for overclocking but a locked CPU which you can´t overclock. Get a 6600k or a non overclockable mobo

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X PBO GPU: Asus Strix RTX 3090 OC Mobo: Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z RGB 3600Mhz CL17

CPU Cooler: Corsair H150i Capillex Storage: Samsung 980 Pro and 970 Evo 1TB Samsung 860 EVO 1TB Crucial MX300 525GB WD Black 2TB PSU: Corsair HX1000 Case: Corsair 500D SE RGB 6x LL120

This seems like a pretty good build, especially for a first-time build. If you can spare the cash, you might want to go with a Core i7 processor, especially since you plan to use it for things other than gaming. The extra threads will help with CPU-intensive programs. I do agree that you might want to wait for the GTX 1070, as it beats the 970 by a longshot.

He could get away with a smaller PSU and save some money, 750W seems like a bit too much for only a 1070.

You're right, but I went with the 650RM for upgradeability purposes & it turned out the 750RM was cheaper. Though, any other power supply would do just fine.

You are over spending on:

1.  The motherboard - that board is for a K-Series CPU.

2.  That power supply.

3.  The case.

I have many choices here. I am trying to get a general idea of the market but this is the plan that i started out with.....

Alternatively, what build would you recommend for $2000 including tower and monitor. This will be a starter pc build in which i can upgrade the components without having to replace multiple parts because of the platform. Same use scenario. Light use of CAD programs as in a couple hours a day. I am coming from console gaming and I want to try out PC gaming. I will still use the system for work and gaming.

Why do you want a 144Hz, 1440p monitor?

the 970 is outdated, the 1070 is coming out in a few weeks, get the 1070 :)

agreed, and if OP can be more patient, he should wait for AMD card to see which is better on price/performance and @Chunky77, you can buy the rest of the component and wait on the GPU, you can still play games..just turn down the setting. You know... better to wait and get the best out of your money than to follow your urge to "I WANT TO GAME NOWWWW"

I was looking at it but it seems that due to pricing this would not be possible. Maybe in the future when i look at upgrading i might go for 1440p but I now know that 1080p is the way to start.

Why 144Hz?

Why not a standard IPS panel at 1080p and 60Hz?

You could do something like this, I explain why below:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($483.00 @ Centre Com)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler  ($55.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($191.00 @ PLE Computers)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  ($115.50 @ Newegg Australia)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($207.00 @ IJK)
Case: Phanteks ECLIPSE P400 ATX Mid Tower Case  ($99.00 @ PCCaseGear)

The CPU will last a minimum 5 years.  When you feel it getting sluggish you can OC it to keep it viable for a year or two longer after that.  The high speed RAM will also contribute to the CPU's performance.

GPUs are changed more often.  Game development heavily weighs on advancements in 3D acceleration, more than CPU performance.  This means as the technology improves, game developers will increase the strain any given game will place on the GPU.

The RX 480 looks to be a fantastic 1080p card.  It should close in on the performance of a R9 390X/GTX 980.  The card is set to release between a $200-$230 USD price point.  You can happily game on this easily for the next two years, at 1080p.

The next upgrade would probably be your desired 1440p or even 4K.  At that point the GPUs will be much better, and hopefully cheaper too.

IDK, this stresses the idea that you can future-proof your CPU to a good degree; much easier to do than spending $1000 on a GPU, only to have it shadowed a year later by a cheaper GPU.  Flagship GPUs are never a good value.  It is that mid-high range market that pays off.  You get to game at high-ultra settings and when you want to change it, you are not throwing away $500-$700 in the process.

How much do you think the GTX 980 (around $450 now) will be worth if the RX 480 ($230) can keep up with it?  That GTX 980 is around 1 year old.
