The nhd14 is one of the best air coolers out there, easily keeping pace with the h80, while being quieter, and having about 10x less possibility of dying on you, and about 100x less possibility of it taking other components with it if it does die.

Honestly, water cooler is only viable if you're planning on running a very... very hot system either because of a major overclock, or a massively hot running cpu like the 9590 or 8350 oc'd to 5ghz. And even then its value lies in high end water cooling aio's, or custom loops. These 120/140mm rads simply don't cool better enough than air coolers at 1/2 their price to be worth it at all.

I do understand the e-peen extension you can get from being able to say, "Hey man, my rig is water cooled!" That's partly why I myself even opted for a 360mm aio, that and I wanted to overclock my 4790k

So with an skylake i5 oced to 4.5 or 4.5 on 1.325v, i will be under 70C on with are cooler?

You could probably rather very easily achieve 4.5ghz well under 1.35v probably more or less around 1.28v but each cpu is different. For long term use, exceeding 1.3v is not recommended on anything short of a very good cooling setup. It can lead to high sustained temperatures and instability. generally in the overclocking world, 1.3v is the magic number to stay under.

Just as a bit of a tell, even on my 360mm rad I don't run my cpu past 1.31v. Though, i use the machine very often, and more often than not have cpu usage above 80% while doing so its a bit of an extreme.

Not sure if a troll, or legitimately doesn't understand cpu cooling technology.

Water coolers will never go BELOW ambient temperature, just like an air cooler. And SOME water coolers are better than SOME air coolers, and vice versa.

Just one more question, if my case has a max of 165mm clearance should i go with a 160mm tall cooler or a 165mm tall cooler

Clearance is generally from motherboard tray to side-panel, but not all manufacturers measure that, some will account for a motherboard so you always want to give it some room for clearance. I'd not go for a cooler larger than 160mm of height, and even then I wouldn't be super surprised if it didn't fit for some reason or another.

Thats a bit 'iffy' because the case has 165mm of clearance, the d15 is 165mm tall... So it might fit, or it might not. You could probably flex the side panel ever so slightly if you really wanted it to fit, but that puts un-needed stress on the mounting bracket and cpu/motherboard.

A NH-D15 fits just fine. The heatsink itself is 160mm tall.

yeah, cooling performance goes low end air<mid tier air/low end water (120mm rads)<high end air/mid tier water (240mm rads)<high end water<exotic cooling methods

As previously mentioned the nh-d15 is only 160mm, and depending on fan placement may be taller, so if you want that then go for it

Didn't want to start a new water vs cooling thread so i thought i'd just bust into this one (sorry...)

cryorig r1 ultimate(with three fans) vs noctua nh-d15(i'm assuming I can use three fans) vs corsair h100i gtx vs nzxt kraken x61 vs cooler master nepton 240? I mean, I've heard a lot of good things about the cryorig r1 ultimate (and i must admit, it is one of the best-looking air coolers) but my biggest fear with air coolers is the size. I fear the cryorig and noctua won't fit in my case (which is a corsair 400c or a phanteks enthoo pro m acrylic... i'm not sure). But at the same time, this is for college, so I don't want to bug my roommate with the constant fan noise of water coolers (cause aren't they loud compared to air coolers). So yeah, sorry to barge in the thread, but a suggestion would be nice (also a case one would be nice too.)

Thanks and sorry for attacking this thread.

ps, i might overclock the 6600k... or at least if i ever learn how to and i find the time to stress test the cpu to make sure it can run that fast and not crash...

I actually just read that the biggest difference between the two is price and cpu temp. Supposedly the dh-15 cools the cpu by 2c more than the dh-14, so if you can find a nh-15 for a price that can justify the 2c lower cooling, then that's an option. Again, it also needs to fit in the case, you wouldn't want a build with your case semi close. haha
