That is my build. I was wondering if it would be better to use an extra 50 bucks to get a refurb GTX 970 off newegg or wait for the new RX 480 AMD has announced? Most of what I'll be using it for is lower end games, but I'd like to play dayz or possibly fallout 4. Besides the gpu I was also wondering if AMD for a cpu is a dead end. Will I not be able to upgrade much further? I was planning on getting a cooler and overclocking in the future so as to not bottleneck the gpu, especially if I go for the 970.

if you want to play fallout 4, I would recommend getting an FX 8350 from AMD and overclock it.

Shouldn't go with amd with a $600 budget imo, dead end with their cpus.

This will be better for $600, but live off the iGPU and wait for an r9 480 if possible.

Why the i5-6400? It's turbo clock is slower than the amd and it is $80 more. And you can say with the hyperthreading its like 8 cores, but 6 at 3.5GHz still beats 8 at 3.3 GHz especially in gaming. Is it that expensive just because of the integrated graphics? If I were to go the intel route an i3-6100 would be much better, would it not?

The 6 cores in the 6300 have much lower IPC compared to a skylake i5, as such it can't perform as well as an i5. In fact, an fx 8 core can only match a skylake i3 in gaming(budget rendering/editing is a different story)

Sorry, I'm fairly new to a lot of this. So to a point the clock speed doesn't matter as much as the ipc? is there any correlation between the two?

Basically, the IPC (or Instruction Per Cycle) differs from CPU to CPU. The architecture of each CPU means that core clocks can't be used as a viable comparison between CPUs of different architectures, especially of different manufacturers. Your best bet is to look at benchmarks of each one and make your decision based on that. Personally, I still have a system with an FX8320 in it that is totally rock solid at any game I play on it. If you live near a MicroCenter, check their prices. They generally sell their CPUs much cheaper than everywhere else (some even below cost.) Just my 2 cents.

I will likely sound stupid asking this, but the frequency or clockspeed is the speed of the cycle? so if a cpu had half the ipc of another it would have to run double the frequency to perform at the same rate? If that makes any sense at all? Thanks by the way for helping educate me. I thought the major difference between intel and amd was price and preference lol.

I... guess so? Theoretically, that would be true. I think... lol.

Buy it June 29th when the gpu releases. This will fucking crush 1080p gaming.

Ok last question, is the haswell really better than the 4690k? as I said, I wanted to OC in the future and I'm not too far to make a drive to the metroplex to pick one up cheaper at microcenter. Oh and why micro-ATX for the mobo?

4690k is haswell, devil's canyon is just a fancy name for it. Skylake is 10% better than haswell. At this budget, don't get an oc intel cpu as it doesn't improve performance by that much and it'll compromise the performance/quality of your other components.

As for the motherboard size, there honestly isn't much of any difference between ATX and MicroATX these days for the average consumer. For people who need tons of PCI-E slots for multiple GPUs and other add-in cards, they'll need ATX or bigger but if you're just running one graphics card, any size should be fine. Even miniITX boards are usually fine but you have literally no option to add something in the future unless you want to lose a graphics card.

In fact, I've had an ATX motherboard for years and finally got really tired of having such a massive machine taking up so much space on my desk. I finally moved down to mATX and I don't regret it at all.
