asking for a friend....mac book question

so my brother just texted me looking for a bigger ssd because when he edits videos on his mac book the clips completely fill up his hard drive. Is there a way to edit video stored on an external drive so he doesn't have a to buy a new ssd?

Why not add a HDD and yes you can edit things on a external hard drive, but don't quote me on that

It's because it's a laptop, he only has space for one drive unless he gets a special case to fit in the DVD drive and removes the DVD drive to install it

well thats what i thought but when i asked him if he tried it he told me that imovie loaded the clips onto his internal drive. i mean hes using a mac so i dont expect him to know how to tinker with things, im thinking it has to be possible to edit clips from an external drive but it is imovie.....

Yes, but it would be quite a downgrade for him since he has an SSD as his OS drive. It would be best to just buy a little 500gb or 1tb external drive that he can carry around. I have one that's about the size of a phone and it's pretty fast.

yea he HAS an external drive already but hes telling me he cant edit directly from that external drive, imovie is filling up his ssd instead of just using the hard drive. if i wasnt across the state i could probably figure it out.

You should be able to set the default folder to save the work onto the external but you would have to have the external to continue working on anything that you have saved on the drive and access the files that are on said drive. I said drive a lot

Maybe the external drive is the wrong format imovie needs a drive or a partition to be formated as  "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
