GTX 780 VS R9 290

Hey there,

I can buy a 780 or a R9 290 for 200$ (CAD so 155 USD) . Which one should I get.

Thanks!

Also, I'm paying 60$ CAD to upgrade from my 7950 to these cards.

I think its a good deal, but not 100% sure.

Thanks again lol

What model of 780, and what model of R9 290? If it's a higher end one like a Lightning or Classified, with some overclocking I think it should be able to beat a 290. (If you can get up past ~1300 mhz or so) Driver improvements for AMD's current gen has benefited the 290 quite a bit, so it should be faster in most titles.

its windforce, not sure for 290.

I thought the 780 was faster and comparable to 290x.

Back in the day when they were released yes.  But AMD's drivers have been getting progressively better over the years, bringing the 290 up in performance to be a bit faster than the 780.

780 is quite a bit faster, if you can spare the $60 CAD, then for sure get the 780 instead.

If the r9 290 is anything other than a reference, it's probably best to go after the 290.  (if it's the roughly the same price as the 780)

Why not just get the new AMD card coming out, the RX 480? Its $200 and will beat both of those cards...

If he's looking at ~200 cad, that RX480 will probably launch at 300CAD

Didn't pay attention to CAD. :$ I was thinking USD where the 480 is a no brainer.

Ask for a picture or exact model name/number.
