Summer Job?

Hi Everyone!

I'm still fairly young, and I wanted to know if there was some sort of job I could get over the summer? I don't really want to walk around my neighborhood, and ask people to walk their dogs, or mow the lawn. I just want a job that could pay some money. I'd like to earn money so that way I can sort of teach myself about budgeting and using my money wisely ( mainly to use for computer parts/games ).

How old are you? Unless you're dirt poor, i suggest not getting a job until you are in college because trust me, you will work everyday for the rest of your god given life.

13, Almost 14. I honestly want to get a job, I need to teach myself how to manage time better. I'm a very slow person, I can't afford being slow in the future.

Most places won't even consider people that young as eligible to be hired.  Invest in spending times with your friends and having fun, you'll regret not doing so very very soon. With that said, the likely places you can look for are fast food chains like McDonald's and Burger King.

I don't want to work at a Fast Food Restaurant, I'd be willing to work Newspaper delivery, or something along the lines like that.

Yeah I had wanted to get a job when I turned 15, but I figured I wait until this year which I'm 16 now. Have been since January. I've been infrequently looking for jobs and applying. Though I broke my ankle at the end of January and late March/Early April was working on getting back to walk. 

Personally I think that having a job in high school is fine. Though my mom doesn't make a lot of money, so getting a job wouldn't be too bad. Also I want to build a really good PC.

Though, I'm not a fan of bringing myself into someone elses topic like this, but whatever.

 

To be perfectly honest @OGSeraph wait until you're 16, though maybe at 14 you might be able to be do something like newspaper delivery. So far my luck with getting a job at a retail store hasn't been the greatest. I applied to Target twice. The second time I messed up my hours available. Then I applied to Walmart about 2 weeks ago. Then last week or something like that I applied to Starbucks. Haven't heard back from any of them.

Working below 16 really screws you. Most employers use opportunity wage so you get paid less then half of minimum wage for 6 months and can't work more then 40 hours a week. Just teach yourself a skill like programmer with your free time and get a better job when you are old enough.

Hasn't screwed me starting at 12. Though most of the workers are family or close friends and my grandpa owns the store. Back to the OP. Does any of your family have a business ?

My aunt owns a nailshop, she said that I could come down and work for her anytime ( Make some pretty good money! ). However, she lives quite far away.

I disagree. I started work at the age of 11 at a used car garage, full time in holidays and part time otherwise. Whilst the work was grueling and the owner was an unpleasant man-pig I was paid a decent wage cash in hand, gained a degree of independence and I got to learn how to drive at the same time... On the whole I picked up some very valuable life experience from that opportunity.

The pay is what your gimped on and the type of labor. I would honestly rather do an apprenticeship at Cray for nothing then flip burgers for minimum wage

Im a butcher and I get paid full minimum wage as in I have to pay taxes

I strongly STRONGLY disagree with this advice.

 

Unless your parents are pretty wealthy, you'll be living on a fairly strict budget in college. That means you need to know the value of money. You need budgeting and basic finance skills, and you need to respect money. And I don't mean know the "theory or math" of budgeting. I mean you need practical experience doing it.

 

I think every student, unless they are absolutely too busy with extracurricular activities (sports, dance, music lessons/clubs, etc), should work part time, at least during high school. If you're 13 and still in primary/middle school? Sure, you don't need a job. But if you're 15 or 16, you should most definitely be working. You don't need to work 40 hours a week or anything, but working 5-10 hours a week while in school is very good for your character, and you learn a lot of really valuable skills about working and about earning/budgeting money.

 

Plus, having the freedom of your own saved up money is quite the feeling. And you should be saving for College (Assuming you don't live in a country with free post secondary education - and even then, you should still be saving for living expenses like rent and food).

To be perfectly honest, every person - every person, should work Fast Food jobs, at least once in their life. It's a good experience and it really teaches you to respect those who work there. It sucks, and people treat you like shit every day, because they think you're subhuman just because you work at McDonalds.

 

However, at your age, you probably won't be able to land a fast food job because of labour laws in most countries. I would suggest the Newspaper Delivery is a good choice. Also, frankly, your original post, about not wanting to ask your neighbours to mow the lawn, walk dogs, etc... you should not dismiss that. Unless you find something better, you should most definitely walk around your neighbourhood and ask them if you can do these sorts of odd jobs.

As mentioned above, I strongly believe every student should work fast food at least once in their live. It's not about the pay, it's about experiencing something that so many people look down upon and think is pathetic or an easy job or whatever.
