Part list finalized, input would be appreciated!

Well I've had the same core components since 2009, with Pascal dropping the time has come at last.^_^

This machine is for 1440p gaming and VR.

I'm just waiting to pull the trigger on a 1080, want to see more partner boards released. Based on local pricing might just go with a 1070 instead, we'll see.

In about a years time or whenever the need arises I'll be turning this into an SLI setup.

  • I'm set on the CPU, based on my research going with the unlocked model wouldn't give that much extra performance and here in NZ the price difference is about $70 between the two
  • I like the motherboard's aesthetics and it needs to support sli and nvme which are my two main requirements
  • I picked the Zalman cooler because I'm not fond of the impersonal, boring looking tower blocks and reviews suggest it performs excellently
  • RAM is RAM, corsairs heatsinks look pretty cool and match the rest of the build's aesthetics. I realize I won't be needing 32GB of this stuff, but I want all the slots filled for aesthetics and going with 4GB modules seems so old fashioned
  • OS will be on the m.2 obviously, I'm prepared to pay that premium for the Samsung drive's alleged super snappy performance
  • The Seagate is basically for porn only
  • Intake: 3x120mm in dat Noctua puke brown, they wont be visible and I'm rather curious to see them in person after hearing so much about them
  • Riing 140 exhausting the rear because they look really awesome
  • Possibly a NZXT HUE+ LED kit, we'll see about that. I like its configurability and magnetic mounts

On a less important note, can anyone suggest a reasonably fast external bluray player? Going without any 5.25" drives is totally dandy, but I wouldn't want my movie collection going to waste. Or alternatively, I don't suppose anyone here has any firsthand experience with a PS4 driving that PG279Q over hdmi?

Don't waste the money on an AIO, get an i7-6700k for only a little more and find a good air cooler that you like. That will allow you to get the most power for your money.

I wont be overclocking, the AIO CPU cooler is for aesthetics only. Stock fans replaced with Noctuas to minimize noise. Rad top mounted, exhausting in pull configuration for easy cleaning. 3x120mm fans at the front on intake, and a Riing 140 exhausting the rear because they look really awesome. Could possibly flip it around and just exhaust through the top rad?

I've never had a watercooled system before and to be perfectly honest the idea of liquid inside my PC still makes me feel a little uneasy so I could end up with this beauty, supposedly it performs outstandingly, and I love how its got more personality than those big ugly tower blocks. Or am I just being a dumbass?

Depending on how stupid I get I might end up with the Sabertooth Mark 1 purely because its the sweetest looking mobo I've ever seen, I havent quite decided if I'm willing to pay that much of a premium though.

if you won't OC then don't get a liquid cooler

ALSO If you want aestetics then fill all ram slots

Liquid coolers are meant for overclocking and keeping the cpu cool

Agree with the above... AIO also adds another point of failure.. the pump or if the pipes get blocked

Also, thats a fairly quiet case and WD blacks are loud...

Drop the $100 of fans, spend a little more where you need to, a little less for just as good a product and way more storage.

I'd go with This personally... 5820k/air cooler/PWM fans and I prefer that case, has lots of room (it's massive) and should last you a good few builds even if you decide to watercool in the future.

Alright you guys have convinced me, I'll be going with an aircooler - I'm feeling more comfortable with that already.

Thanks for the suggestions, I have some more research to do now.

He can watercool fine in the Evolve.. he's not overclocking.. and that case is huge.. good for some, horrible for others.

Also, he's not doing content creation but may go sli and use an NVME drive over pci-e lanes and your specing a processor with 28 lanes.

If your going x99, your going for pcie-lanes and cores.. he needs neither and you gave him 2 cores he doesn't need and left out the pci-e lanes he would want.

usb3.1, m.2 not using PCI-lanes is good.. stay z170

dont waste your money on an AIO just because it "looks good" that money can go somewhere else such as getting a 6700k. Changed the PSU to a cheaper but still high quality one. Added a GTX 1080 on there.

Yeah I'm locked into the CPU, based on my research going with the unlocked model wouldn't give that much extra performance and here in NZ the price difference is about $70 between the two. But thanks for mentioning nvme support, m.2 drives are new to me and I wasnt 100% if it'd be compatible. The physical sizing, interface settings and key types make them fairly confusing.

Waiting on more partner boards to be released and wanna see how AMD's stuff is gonna affect things. I'll be going with a 1080 unless the 1070's pricing is really good. I'm located in NZ, small market, we end up paying a hefty premium on gear.

Ah, I see. The $200 480 might be a good option then.

understood.. but the k chips really hold their value too and it opens up the option of overclocking (though there are bioses you can use to overclock non k chips this time anyway)

Just to consider.

Form.2 drives and NVME..

The speed of how the M.2 connects is important... m.2 can run over Sata or PCI-e.. you want it over pci-e as sata doesn't have the bandwidth.

It depends on the board... Look for the bit with sli and m.2 populated to find a board that suits your needs.
