1. Budget & Location

My buying-location is Germany, Switzerland or the UK (whatever is cheaper). My budget is around 4.000 EUR.

2. Aim

As written in the title I need my PC for several purposes. I'll list them according to their priority:

1. First, I want to play triple-A games in 1440p resolution with at least 60 fps on ultra-settings.

2. Second, I often use my computer for scientific simulations. For instance, using C++ (BLAS-libraries) for matrix multiplication, or using python to simulate a multi-dimensional grid with a value-function over some area. I need such stuff to be fast, because I really despise wait time :D

3. Third, I want to be able to record videos (1440p, ~30min) and to be able to render/edit them properly in a reasonable amount of time. [< 2 hours]

3. Monitors

I am also going for a new monitor and I plan on using two monitors. My main monitor should have a 1440p resolution, be at least 27" big, and have an IPS panel. The main monitor is the monitor I'm planning to buy new. My second monitor is the Asus MX279H monitor and is already there.

4. Others

I want to build my system in such a way that I leave the door open to buy a second GTX 1080 later on and use SLI.

5. Questions:

I have two specific questions to that built: [but of course all advice is welcome :) ]

1. pcpartpicker.com mentions in the compatibility check section that "The motherboard M.2 slot #0 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated, two SATA 6Gb/s ports are disabled." . Well, what does that mean and is that critical? ^^

2. a friend of mine mentioned that the "Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3" will might overhang all of my RAM slots. Is that correct? And if so, can you suggest me an alternative which does not have this overhang problem and is also quite quiet?

Thanks for your help!

Best wishes,

Hi!

The GTX 1080 is massively overkill for 2K. Consider getting a 1440p or 4K display for gaming.

Are you sure you're going to use those 6TB of storage? You might not need 'em.

When you populate the M.2 port, you can't use all your SATA ports. Should be fine since you only have 2 SATA devices.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Computer having a hard time powering on? Troubleshoot it with this guide. (Currently looking for suggestions to update it into the context of <current year> and make it its own thread)

this would be a way better build:

the psu may seem a little weird but its on of the very rare 230V 80+ certified. so its ideal for europe.

Thanks for your replies so far:

@Energycore: Oh, I always thought 2k meant 1440p :$:$. I actually want to go for a 1440p monitor - I will edit that in my original post. I did asked myself whether I want to go for a 1440p monitor and have high fps (>>60), or go with a 4k monitor and settle for ~60fps. In the end I'll probably go with the first option. [or is this a stupid choice?]

@ChisCross: I looked over your suggestion, but as I am a newbie I have some difficulties evaluating the changes. Can you explain a little bit more why your suggestion is a far better build?

@general: I would also like to go for a non-founder edition of the GTX 1080. Are there any sellers already? And if not, do we know the release dates yet?

Best regards,

With the monitor you posted there, the 1080 will drive it well. You have my blessing.

As for custom-cooled 1080s, we don't know. Could be any day.
