So I was repurposing an old laptop power brick as an ac to dc converter for a hot wire cutter and when I cut off the connection at the end the wires are divided in layers. I dont really know how to describe it but on the first layer and second layer there was two thick layers of wire which i'm guessing due to there thickness in proportion to the third cable are the positive and negative terminals. However there is a final wire going through the centre of the cable which is much smaller than the other two which i'm guessing is the earth wire considering I am using a UK plug which comes with an earth pin but I'm not 100% sure considering i'm not an electrician. Is this the earth wire? Thanks in advance.

Be sure that you are heavily researching what you are doing with your power brick mods before attempting to use it. If you make a mistake, you could cause damage to all connected devices, cause fire, or even electrocute yourself (It could possibly kill you, depending on the amperage involved).

So just make sure to triple check all your wiring. And please use a soldering iron when splicing wires, not just electrical tape and/or Marrettes (Twist-on wire connectors - often called "Scruits" in the UK). Solder the wires, and use heat shrink over the individual exposed conductors, and then, if you really want, use more heat shrink around the entire bundle of soldered wires.

Anyway, yeah, that'll be the Earth Wire (We commonly call it the Ground Wire here in Canada).

Can you post some pictures so we can confirm?
