Hi , I got a lot of question about Virtualisation , I want to make 3 classroom of 30 Computer each one and I want to know each motherboard i should take and if i need a dedicated GPU for it

I think i will need a dual xeon  E5-2670 and i will let 6 Go for each virtual machine so I will need 360 GB of RAM but my main question is how will I plug all the monitor ect

I have 2000 Dollar for the hardware ( without the 90 screens )

The computer will be used for browsing web - and a lot of different kind of software from educational to editing and montage

Do you have 90 computers that you want to connect to a server?

The ideal is that one computer  can handle 90 virtual machine and each virtual machine will have it's own monitor and keyboard I don't know if it's possible or at least 3 computer that can handle each one 30 virtual machine

Virtualized desktops (VDI) don't work out cheaper to deploy versus dedicated workstations if you also have to buy thin clients/low powered computers to connect to the server.

VDI should also be avoided when video rendering software is going to be used, there are very special and costly requirements to get that working.

VDI is never cheaper unless you are talking a massive deployment or users will bring their own devices to connect to the virtual desktop.

Buy normal desktops, buy a standard server to run a few VMs like Active Directory, File Server and Windows Deployment Services. Setup GPO's for folder redirection and software deployment.

1 Server is a single point of failure, if it goes down for any reason you'll have 90 people unable to work.

I dont recommend to run 90! computers on one vm server that would cost a lot more than $2000

Ubuntu 24.04 on Ryzen 5 5600x and GTX 1070

Mint 22 on Razer Blade i7-11800h and RTX 3070

I think I understand what you are saying, but that is going to be complicated and more expensive than buying say 90 used Core2 Duo based computers which will be faster (Sadly).

$2,000 isn't enough for 90 computer/thin clients anyway.

the   E5-2670   Just cost 200 dollar and it's an 8 core 16 thread , the architecture might be old but it's really powerfull and the computer don't really need any big requirement a celeron would be good

Also $2000 won't buy the system specs you are talking about. Our ESX hosts at work are HP DL360 Gen9 dual E5-2690v3 386GB ram and cost $25k NZD.

Yea I get that there is some really nice quality gear on ebay for cheap but the biggest cost will actually be the devices that you need to connect to the virtual desktops. This will be the main cost by far and way so if it costs only 10% more per device to get the performance you need then spending another couple of thousand on a server makes no sense financially.

You can't just use a keyboard, mouse and monitor. You have to have a device to connect to the server over the network. This will cost money, money you will have to spend regardless of virtualizing the desktops or not so what you are planning to do can only cost more.

So the best idea is the make 60 computer with a Celeron G1840 and the rest with a quad core for the editing

that should work but maybe a core 2 duo instead of the celeron

Ubuntu 24.04 on Ryzen 5 5600x and GTX 1070

Mint 22 on Razer Blade i7-11800h and RTX 3070

Yea, and unless you already have a server then getting a lower spec one (than you were planning) for authentication and file storage is recommended.

Btw my previous job was working at an IT contracting company that specialised in the education sector, I've got quite a number of years experience in supporting schools so if you got any other questions or need some help feel free to ask.

By simple head math, you are over budget by a lot with only 2/3's the computers you want.

Celeron based computer = 42+50+20+30+20 = 162

162 * 60 = 9720.

Buy lots of used Core2 Duo based computers, and if you need some faster computer, upgrade some to Core2 Quads or Xeons.

$50 Buys you a computer with a Core2 Duo, 4GB Ram, 160GB HDD,

You can get a LGA 771 (slightly modified LGA 775) for about $15.

(Core2 Duo) (Quad Xeons)

60($50) + 30($50 + $15) = $3000 + $1950

or ~$5,000 for $90 computers.

Normally you want something like a thin client, like the wyse ones from dell. Id buy a cheap desktop for everyone(you can get used ones for about 100) instead of this. Your thinking a much bigger budget for this to work well.
