Recently I have noticed I have been getting a rash from my cheap casio watch so I'm in the market for a new watch in the $70 or less range. I'm currently looking at a few different timex and the seiko 5 but I'm open to recommendations if you can think of something better that is not a casio in that price range.

so the watches I'm looking at are the (not necessarily these colors or bands)

Seiko are great watches, i have a slightly more expensive one(300 or 400 i do not recall) that is really nice. So if anything i would go with that. And if you end up liking it, you could always upgrade to the higher end Seiko models like the Astron http://seikousa.com/collections/astron/ which are not overly expensive compared to other brands.

Assuming that you already have a mobile phone (as most do these days) why not simply use that instead? It would save you that extra ~$70 altogether.

Personally I don't quite understand the need to use a watch these days (assuming one also possess a phone). ~25 years ago, yes and indeed I also owned one back then.

I can't help but cringe on some level when 'watching' an individual look at their wrist before or after looking at their phone. Did you miss the clock on the phone?

Am I missing something fundamental? Why does one need to carry n# physical clocks about one's person? I really really simply don't understand.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.

It can be used as just an accessory, it doesn't have to be functional.

It's an accessory, a jewellery if you will. A nice watch looks good, compliments your clothes and shoes and makes a statement to the people around you. Also, it is impolite to look at your phone in a social context even if it's just to tell time, but a quick glance at your wrist is not.

And if you are in to that sort of stuff it is fascinating how they work. :-)

Watches is a guy's jewelry really. Sure we can have rings, necklaces and whatever else we wish to but watches it the main thing we have. I have a expensive Nixon watch ($600) and even though it is expensive I wouldn't trade it for anything, I don't want a smart watch or anything. It does what it does, looks awesome and tell time. As for a cheap watch recommendation I don't really have one other then that you might wanna save your money and go balls to the walls and get a sick one that will last you for 10+ years. I never buy "cheap" watches, I don't do it now and I won't do it in the future. I buy something cool and something that will last from good known brands. But hey, thats only one mans opinion on it. Look at it like this. Women buys; rings, earrings, a foot chain, a necklace, watches and bracelets and probably spend about $500 give or take every other year (Depending on the kind of woman) I buy nothing but a watch spend $600 and keep it for 10+ years. or as long as it last, perhaps I decide I wan't another watch so I can alternate between the two. So even if I buy 4 watches in the same price range and keep it for 10 years atleast a woman will still spend more than me on her jewelry in that same 10 year period. They spoil themselves with shiny stuff. Why can't I?

I once explained to my girlfriend what true love is. I said, "If you were a shit, I'd put you back in" and to this day, she is still my little shit.

Because a phone  can have its battery dying, because a real watch can ne a lot more classy. Because you only can have a watch during exams or academic contests. Because it's easier to get the time from your watch during meetings, during conversations etc. Also because a mechanical watch is so much more beautiful to see the time from :)

Because I'm not supposed to be using my phone at work. Also I'm the kind of person that used to carry a pocket watch before even though I had a cell phone so ya....

I'm kind of leaning to the Seiko 5 at the moment just because I'm hearing that the Timex tend to have a decently loud tick which may be annoying but I like the idea of the cheap bands for the timex weekends.

I'm not looking for jewelry just a beater watch for work. I have decently scratched up my cheap casio in just a few months as it is. If I was getting myself a decent watch I would probably get bulova

I heard swatch watches are cheap enough, and well built. Not fancy at all buy these work. I had that as my first watch, it still works. Well I don't use it anymore since I had a jewelry one for my 18th birthday, but I can assure it still works :)

I understand the points about restrictions on use and on fashion.

To address the fashion point then; for ~$70 really? Would it not be painfully obvious that it would be an extremely cheap watch or even a fake knock off around that value? I suppose it comes down to a subjective argument on what is considered cheap or expensive relative to the individual.

In any event, if we are talking about fashion then I'd personally be embarrassed to display something that was obviously worth so very little...

I don't disagree it is not a fashion statement for me to want a $70 watch, it is purely for functioning as a watch. My current watch I only paid $15 for and it still works but I'm getting a rash from it so I figure its time to take a small step up in watches.

I'm currently looking at the seiko 5 military and maybe getting a nato band for it if I don't like the stock cheap band.

The 3 I'm looking at right now are these they are just different colors of the same watch however only the blue has a warranty through seiko while the black and green have a warranty from amazon
