For a friend, trying to keep it (relatively) low budget overall hence some of the cuts you'll see. Figured Skylake wouldn't be much more expensive than, say, a 4460-based system since I'm not overclocking anything. I'm taking the 1TB drive from his laptop so although it won't be very fast, it should be fine for mass storage. SSD is about the cheapest one I could find with decent ratings. I use it right now and it works fine for a budget PC. Modular PSU is useless unless you go fully modular in the SG13B (coming from experience) so I didn't even bother.

What's the total budget?

Looks pretty good for $1018 though.

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

No big need for a 3rd party cooler, as you can't overclock.

Take that $40 out and put it somewhere else.

I disagree. From what I've seen of the 1070's release price, I reckon it's better value for money than any AMD card right now.

Plus, with a higher refresh rate monitor, screen tearing isn't as noticeable, lessening the advantages of G-sync or Freesync.

It has more performance but you get the nicer display as far features go, dunno how close Polaris 10 will be to the 1070

You could also, and probably the best option for the long run, is get a 1440p 144hz display, and then never have to replace the display, it's about $350 for a free-sync one. but that would mean getting like a 380, which could do 720p at 144hz for AAA games at least, but then eventually the really high end GPU comes out that can push 144fps at 1440p

I use that cooler on my 4460 and I figured I'd throw it in there just to be safe (since airflow is very restricted in that case). If budget becomes an issue I'll get rid of it.

120GB is fine for his case, only a boot SSD :P

I'd disagree on the 390, I want this build to last so I want a good 1000 series card. I own the monitor I'm suggesting and it looks way better than any FreeSync panel I've seen.

I'm kind of set on the 1070, looks very good price-to-performance.

PSU is fine, use it in my 4690k build. Read my comment on the modularity.

Too much of a hit in the budget imo, 1080@144hz is plenty for him.

As far as I can tell, any 144hz free sync monitors will defeat the $1k aim of this build with their price, let alone 1440p and freesync.

The price of freesync monitors isn't related to the release of Polaris.

What I'm saying is that a 1080p 144hz Freesync monitor will be more expensive than a 1080p 144hz non-Freesync monitor.

It would be $200 + $350 vs $300 + $200 for GPU/display, so it's only $50 more or so for an even better display

Going FreeSync would require me to get an AMD GPU which I don't want to do until Polaris

Boot SSD is not an issue

If Polaris seems tempting I might consider. Otherwise I'm staying non-Freesync I think.

Agreed. It's a very risky time to go with AMD.

It was only $20 more for free-sync, might as well get that anyways just incase nvidia decides to care about freedom someday.

That's basically what mobile G-sync is anyways, besides G-sync probably won't last given it's hefty price increase.

IMO at 144hz, screen tearing isn't that noticeable. Plus the higher refresh rate means that you can turn V-sync on, and it won't create as much of a delay as a 60hz monitor. (But I still wouldn't turn V-sync on for games like CS:GO)

I never use V-sync for anything, for old games I just turn on a frame limit

but it's still a little nicer, and the 1440p 144hz TN version at least is fairly affordable
