1 house, 1 CPU

In his new build of the multi gamer 1 cpu machine, Linus said that the 8 gamers setup offer a more realistic application of his idea.... however, as I commented on the video's topic, I think that this in not exactly a setup that would be practical in any house... I mean, over the cost of that hardware, I do not ofter have 8 gamers under my roof. So my big question is, do you think that Linus idea of having a single machine to handle many users would be practical in a real world scenario today. Would it be possible to have only 1 CPU (the same way Linus count several CPU mounted to a single board as a single one) in a house ? For a comparative price to have individual machines to do the same job.

 

Do you think that it's possible to have 3 gaming PC + 1 HTPC + 1 central data pool (NAS) for a lower price than comparative performance on a single mobo with VM ?

 

Would anybody interested to help me build a part list and compare the price ? That could be really interesting and end up being a real life scenario that people could actually implement at home.

piratical no since when is his channel practical, its just for fun and to show off what a computer is capable of doing, LTT is full of enthusiasts not just your average computer users. its fun to push the limits and see what you can do.

 

and are you asking for all that in the same pc?

I mean they already do this all the time...like everywhere. Example is for college I can use a chromebook to use VMware and I have my own desktop within a server on campus on can access from anywhere. Each student is dedicated one Tesla and 1TB of Intel 750 series SSDs and half a Xeon. The latency is less then 30ms so you can't even notice it. So basically they have a giant supercomputer they divide up into smaller ones for each student. It is insanely fast and comes preloaded with 1,459 programs ranging from NukeX, Adobe CC, Maya, and so on.

well, linus basicly built his very own nvidia grid supercomputer.

is it something average joe may do? nope.

 

it is mostly a showoff of possibilities, iirc linus even mentioned LAN centres, and how ballin it would be.

anyways, that said, this is NOT a price/performance thing by any stretch of the imagination, its basicly a convenience thing of having everything in one box. imagine it as the home desktop equivalent of a virtualized server enviroment.
