Posted May 25, 2016 Hey guys recently i have built my computer with the MSI Z170A Gaming M5 Skylake motherboard and a smd ceramic capacitor fell off behind the board which was at the top. Will this have any effect on the board because the board seems to be doing fine without it?. If you have very steady hands, know how to solder and have a veery small soldering iron you could locate where it fell off and solder it on yourself however I would highly recommend you to contact MSI about this and ask them if this capacitor is needed for basics on this board or just additional features. If for basics then RMA. 8 minutes ago, Bananasplit_00 said: that might have been for a feature you dont use like BIOS overclocking or the onboard video, just remember to sell it as defect if you sell it also you might be able to RMA it so try that If I look at the back side of this motherboard those capacitors look more like they belong to the power delivery but hell who knows on those x layer pcbs. Posted May 25, 2016 I'm running an EVGA nforce 680i SLI motherboard in my brothers rig that had two of those fall off next to the top PCIe x16 slot. I think it should be fine. Posted May 25, 2016 It is most likely a bypass cap, so it will runn fine regardless. However, they do not simply fall off, most likely the PCB was heavely bent due to temperature stress. So there is a high chance of micro fractres in a lot of the other SMD parts. So RMA is a very good idea. I stop using them when anything falls off, or pops (I had one board that still worked perfectly after losing multiple electrolytic caps due to catastrophic failure-still don't know how either). Just have a colse look at the PCB to look if you also damaged a copper trace. Generally speaking, just runn a stress test for a few hours. If it's stable you are fine. Posted May 25, 2016 The soldering is ok, but personally I wouldn't have soldered the same cap onto the board. When exeriencing mechanical stress, caps like this can create a short circuit inside you can't see. Get a new cap, or just runn it withiut the cap. No the cap is ok there was nothing wrong with the cap, the cap is in top condition the only thing that happened to it was it was hit with one of my tools lightly just enough for it too fall off soo yeah and the cap was never used it fell off when i got the board. so would it be ok to run the board.
