Hey guys,

I was just wondering if i should overclock my 4790k and/or GTX970 at all. ive heard alot of negative things about overclocking but dat performance increase though....

If i should, how should i go about doing that? I have a Z97X Gaming 3 mobo if that helps.

Thanks,

Zack.

You probably won't see a significant performance increase by OCing your CPU, but you might get 5-10 FPS in games if you OC your 970

(If your main use for your computer is gaming)

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

Remember to quote people if you want them to see your reply!

there really isn't a lot of negatives if any unless you go crazy with the voltage.

Gaming - Ryzen 9800X3D | 64GB 6400mhz cl30 9070 XT

Homelab - many servers...constantly changing.

3970X/256GB - 5950X/128GB ECC - 5600G/96GB - 3400GE/16GB - 3400GE/16GB

You just need to find those same setting in your BIOS, but either than that yes

okay, and with overclocking, will i see a noticeable improvement or is it only minor?

Depends, if the game is SUPER CPU intensive, something like DayZ, Arma 3, GTA 5, BF4, Crysis 3, etc... Then yes you will see a pretty big increase, but if the game densest use much CPU then not really. Of not I have my 4790K OCed to 4.8ghz at 1.3V, I wouldn't go over 1.3V unless you are running custom water loops

Nope as long as you don't go over 1.3V unless you go something stupid like try a 6ghz+ overclock then you are fine. If you are running at 240mm AIO, most 4790Ks will do between 4.6-4.8ghz at 1.3V or less if you did pretty good on the silicone lottery, some people will get ones that can do 4.9 or even 5ghz, you will have to see how you did

Pretty much.

the CPU will pretty much send you back to the bios, GPU drivers will crash and automatically restart. No big deal. If something acts up with the GPU drives (Ex. GPU boost not working) restart your PC.
