fx 6300 To i5 4460

I currently have a fx 6300. But i also have a mobo with a g3258 in it. I was thinking of getting an i5 4460 and using it. I would get it by selling my Fx 6300, asus m5 a97, and g3258. Is it worth the upgrade.

You'd get a lot more single threaded performance, lower heat output, lower TDP....but you'd lose those two extra cores which could be useful in applications that utilize it, and the overclocking ability.

You might see a mild performance increase but I think that's more of a lateral shift and not worth the upgrade.

I'd say if you can sell your other stuff for a good price, and you have the urge to upgrade it would be a slight improvement. I wouldn't buy the 4460 retail though. They sell for quite a lot less used and that would be the best deal for your money.

I do not think it is worth it you should get a DDR4 platform and something like a i5-6600K or better...

the 4460 isnt that much faster then a FX 6300.

Single core performance is higher, but VERY few applications these days, be it in gaming or internet browsing or even MS Office, is truly single threaded. They all use multiple cores/threads, and as a result the most important metric is a mix of the two. The FX 6300 will deliver higher multi-threaded performance then the i5 4460, but the 4460 will be faster in single threads.

 

All in all, the Intel part will be faster at boot-up and small things like that, but at gaming it will be mostly a toss-up between the two.

 

But, don't worry. Soon all the Intel Shills will decend upon this thread and claim how the i5 4460 is the one true CPU. The one and only choice that you can even play a game on.
